Butterfly
Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's like a butterfly in a hurricane
It's like candle lights in the pouring rain
It's like fireflies gathered on the sun
My chances with you are a million to one

Like a driftwood on an ocean wave
That gets tossed and turned like you're doing to me
I was tight up but now I'm coming undone
My chances with you are a million to one

It's like a butterfly in a hurricane
It's like a butterfly in a hurricane

It's like a gunfight when all I got is a knife
Like a lost cause trying to turn back time
Like a double down with a suicide king
I'm DOA, baby, you're killing me

I'm at the starting gate after the race is won
My chances with you are a million to one

It's like a butterfly in a hurricane
It's like a butterfly in a hurricane

I don't care, I'm jumping in
It's hard enough to find the real thing
I don't care if it's a million to one
You're the one for me, yeah

It's like a butterfly in a hurricane
I'm getting beat up but I can take the pain
I got one shot, don't know how it will end
Sometimes baby, the losers win

It's like a butterfly in a hurricane
It's like a butterfly in a hurricane
It's like a butterfly in a hurricane

It's like a butterfly in a hurricane, oh yeah
Oh, in a hurricane

Overall Meaning

The song "Butterfly" by Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band describes the intense and overwhelming emotions of being in love with someone who is unpredictable and difficult to read, like a butterfly caught in a hurricane. The lyrics use powerful metaphors to illustrate the tumultuous nature of the relationship, comparing it to a gunfight when all one has is a knife or a lost cause trying to turn back time. Despite the odds against him, the singer is willing to take a chance on love, even if his chances with this person are a million to one.

The use of the butterfly metaphor is particularly effective, as butterflies are typically seen as delicate and fragile creatures that need to be handled with care. However, in the context of a hurricane, they become a symbol of turmoil and chaos. This reflects the singer's feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty in his relationship, while also acknowledging that love can be a force of nature that cannot be controlled or tamed.

Overall, "Butterfly" is a powerful ballad that captures the intensity and unpredictability of falling in love, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

noah is the lead singer, but kenny is singing with him in this song, as well as several other KWSB songs.... on this album, kenny sings more than just back-up on choruses, etc. -- he sings the verses for the songs "cold," "who's gonna catch you now," and prob another one i cant remember now

@seant1504 Yessss, I just was afraid that Noah would not sing on this album 'cause few years ago Kenny was singing mostly on concerts, but Noah is here! I just love his voice.....
