When Dexys disbanded in 1987, Rowland recorded a solo album called The Wanderer which, together with its three singles, was a commercial failure. His next release was not until 1999 when he recorded a collection of interpretations of classic songs called My Beauty, the album cover of which depicted a heavily made-up Rowland in a dress. This album was also a commercial and artistic failure.
In 2003, Rowland reformed Dexys Midnight Runners and embarked on a successful comeback tour backed up with a greatest hits album including two newly recorded songs, "Manhood" and "My Life in England". Both of these new songs were touted as new singles but, despite airplay on national radio, neither was commercially released.
Rowland recently launched his own MySpace site where he has promised a new Dexy's album soon and regularly writes blogs. A new song "It's OK Johanna" is already available on there. He also appeared as a DJ at the 2007 Big Chill festival.

The Long and Winding Road
Kevin Rowland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door
The wild and windy night
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here?
Let me know the way
Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried
Anyway you'll never know
The many ways I've tried
And still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door
But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don't keep me waiting here
Lead me to your door
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
In Kevin Rowland's song "The Long and Winding Road", the lyrics are about a person who is on a journey, both physically and emotionally, in search of something. The long and winding road that leads to the person's door is a metaphor for the journey that this person must take to find what they're looking for. The road is described as never disappearing, indicating the person's determination to continue on their quest, even when faced with obstacles that may seem insurmountable. The road always brings them back to this person's door, suggesting that there is something important waiting for them there.
The song also references a wild and windy night that has left the person crying tears for the day. The night is symbolic of the hardships that the person has faced on their journey, and the tears represent the pain and sorrow that they've experienced because of it. Despite this, the person is still determined to find their way to the door, pleading for guidance and direction.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the person's perseverance in the face of difficulty. They have been alone and have cried many times, but they've never given up on their search. No matter what happens, they're always led back to the long and winding road. The lyrics suggest that the journey is not over, and that there is still hope for them to find what they're looking for.
