Work Ethic
Kill the Man Who Questions Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One last breath then the heart stops. see i die monday mornings around six o'clock. suffocated with neckties and stuffy office "good mornings" bury me with my briefcase at my side. where is the quality of life we were promised? time spent with nothing to show. calling in sick days just to feel healthy. to prove to myself that i still can. the suit, the work, the tie, the job. it owns you. daddy taught me his work ethic. be up at sunrise to bask in sunny traffic. learned the game away at school. spit at the ones who did it naturally. buy, sell. supply, demand. tick, fuckin' tock. soft talk around the watercooler only distracts me from the thought that i should just run. but come monday morning i know i done best not try a running.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kill the Man Who Questions's song Work Ethic speak to the monotony and dissatisfaction of a traditional work life. The opening lines depict the feeling of suffocation and death that comes with the rigidity of a Monday morning in corporate America. The singer expresses a desire to be buried with his briefcase, symbolizing the all-encompassing hold that work has on his life.

The chorus, "the suit, the work, the tie, the job. It owns you," further emphasizes this idea that the work and the capitalist system have taken over an individual's life. This sentiment is reinforced by the mention of "daddy's work ethic," implying that this cycle of work and servitude has been ingrained in the singer from a young age.

The lines "learned the game away at school. spit at the ones who did it naturally," speak to the idea that capitalism is a game that some are able to play naturally while others are left behind. This creates a sense of anger and resentment toward those who are successful in the corporate world.

Overall, the song speaks to the disillusionment and frustration of a life dominated by work, questioning the value of a work ethic that sacrifices quality of life for financial gain.

An Robin Williams outlook on life was far more important than most realize. This speech was a prophet seeing the future. Giving his revaluation on how love and humanity walk hand in hand. How treating a human as a human an not as an object is exactly what will change humanity.
To any who read this.

"God forbid we treat death with humor."
That line has stuck with me since I saw this in the theaters with my father. I utilize that ideology to this day. ❤️

"a doctor's mission is not just to prevent death but to improve the quality of life. That's why you treat a disease you may win or you may lose but you treat a person I guarantee you will win every time no matter what the outcome" - What a beautiful beautiful masterpiece! Would love to know who penned the words for this screenplay

This is so true. Many doctors have a lot of "head white" mentality type who think they are gods or superhuman. Doctors are meant to uphold the Hippocratic oath but unfortunately money talks and most people just go for the money and put moral principles below them.

Every medical student in school needs to watch this film, because God knows how many doctors lack compassion these days.
