Another One Bites the Dust
Killer Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Steve walks warily down the street
with the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet
machine guns ready to go

Are you ready
Are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

How do you think I'm going to get along
without you, when you're gone
You took me for everything that I had
and kicked me out on my own

Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

[Chorus]
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
There are plenty of ways you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him
You can cheat him
you can treat him bad and leave him
When he's down
But I'm ready, yes I'm ready for you
I'm standing on my own two feet

Out of the doorway the bullets rip
repeating the sound of the beat

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Another One Bites The Dust" by Killer Queen tell a story about a man named Steve who walks down the street with his machine gun, ready to take on anyone who gets in his way. The song is filled with driving percussion and a steady bass line that keeps the listener on the edge of their seat. The chorus repeats the phrase "Another one bites the dust" several times, which can be interpreted as a reference to death or a metaphor for the loss of someone's dignity or pride.

The verses of the song seem to be directed at a specific person, possibly an ex-lover or former friend. The lyrics suggest that this person has taken advantage of the singer and treated them poorly, causing them to feel angry and frustrated. The chorus, however, takes on a more confrontational tone, warning the person that they will "get" them too.

There's been some mis-judgement on what a "remaster" is.

Essentially, the mastering process is the final process of the creating a song; giving overall enhancements to the full song. The point you've made is a common occurrence now. It's been proven a lot of songs "remasters" produced today are basically nothing but a louder copy than the original.

Back in the days of this original recording, "loudness" wasn't a priority, of course they wanted it to be generally loud; but not in comparison to the tracks of today. Today's music is heavily amplified to be as loud as possible without distorting and for a lot of people, this is what the aim of mastering is FOR THEM.

BUT.

With remastering, we have an advantage over the mastering possibilities of the days of this recording.

The advancement of technology!

Technology is developing; the output devices we use are becoming all the more accurate and providing a better response, as well as the technology we use to master music. Digital mastering tools (specifically VST's) offer great, accurate processing. Using VST's also provides MINIMAL (if any) noise, unlike the circuit noise you'd get using analogue equipment

You also have to consider the mastering perspective of the year this was ORIGINALLY mastered. If this song was released when CD was not introduced (most likely) It will have been mastered in a particular way to ensure the best quality for play back; such as "loudness" and the control of certain frequencies.

So, subjectively, it's most likely that a lot of today's remasters will sound dramatically better than the originals. Remasters ARE NOT just "loud version" - Also, this CAN be the case; but not the definition of a "remaster" :)

Hope this helps!
