Since the band's inception, there have been over fifteen musicians in and out of King Diamond, with the only two mainstays being vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Andy LaRocque. In 1987 the band released their second studio release Abigail (their first concept album). Throughout the 1980s, King Diamond released a total of four studio albums. In the early 1990s, the band was put on hold when King Diamond reunited with his former outfit Mercyful Fate. After reforming King Diamond in 1994, Diamond would balance recording and touring with both Mercyful Fate and his eponymous band throughout the 90's. Since the early 2000s, King Diamond have kept recording and touring and, since 2014, the band has been composed of vocalist King Diamond, guitarist Andy LaRocque, guitarist Mike Wead, drummer Matt Thompson, and bassist Pontus Egberg.
I AM

I am, I am standing by the door
The door to freedom the door that I shut so close
And as I take another look at my mind
I seem to think the sun has arrived, no
McKenzie you better realize, now it's just you and I
Back against the wall
McKenzie's on the stone cold floor
Hands tied together, nowhere to go for Mr. Mayor
The door to freedom the door that I shut so close
And as I take another look at my mind
I seem to think the sun has arrived
This court is now in session
You stand accused of child abuse
Of stealing innocence and freedom too
I am the only Judge, I am the only Jury
I am your lawyer too, so tell me what to do
What's it gonna be ?
Are you guilty or are you guilty!
Yes, you just go ahead and cry
Back against the wall
McKenzie's on the stone cold floor
Hands tied together, nowhere to go for Mr. Mayor
The door to freedom the door that I shut so close
And as I take another look at my mind
I seem to think the sun has arrived
But oh no, there is no sun here
There's only darkness
I, the jury and the judge
Find you guilty of stealing the innocence of a child
And therefore we sentence you to die slowly, die
Die die die die die die die
The opening lines of King Diamond's song, "I Am," describe an ominous scene with Lucy sitting on the floor of a tomb, while the singer stands by the door to freedom that he has closed. The song then takes a dark turn as we learn that the singer, McKenzie, is accused of child abuse and stealing innocence and freedom. The singer finds himself backed against the wall with hands tied together and nowhere to go as the only judge, jury, and lawyer, the singer himself, declares him guilty and sentences him to die slowly.
The lyrics of the song are highly symbolic, reflecting on how individuals can become trapped in their own minds and become their own judges, but also their own executioners. The tomb where Lucy was sitting symbolizes the mind, and the door to freedom is the way out. But the singer has shut the door, and in doing so, he has become his own jailer.
The lines "I am the only Judge, I am the only Jury, I am your lawyer too, so tell me what to do" demonstrate how a person's mind can turn against them, leaving them powerless to their own thoughts and judgments. The guilt-ridden protagonist tortures himself by handing down harsh judgments upon himself.
Overall, "I Am" is a deeply introspective track that speaks to the dangers of self-judgment and the importance of finding a way out of one's own mental prison.
