That's The Way It Goes
King Richard & The Knights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Went to work this morning
'Bout two hours late
I don't know how this happened
You know it's just my fate
Now my boss he's mad
About this whole situation
He starts to scream and holler
He thinks my minds on vacation

You know I'm always tryin' to do my best
But it seems that I just can't make the test
No matter what I do or what I say
Things always happen this way

I told this story to my baby
She starts to jump holler and shout
She tells me I'm a big dumbell
And now she tells me to get out!
Now I ain't got noone or nothin'
Not one little thing you see
I finally found the right place
On the wrong day
Yeah!

It's always happening this way
And I look and I try
And I run all around the place
But I just can't find one little thing to say

I try and do my best
Be just like all the rest but here I am

Overall Meaning

, stuck in this situation where nothing seems to go right. The song "That's The Way It Goes" by King Richard and The Knights is an honest and relatable depiction of the struggles of everyday life. The lyrics tell the story of a man who, despite his efforts, can't seem to get anything right. He shows up to work two hours late, and his boss is angry, assuming that the man's mind is on vacation. The man describes how he's always trying his best, but no matter what he does or says, things always seem to happen this way.

The song's chorus emphasizes the idea that life is unpredictable and often unfair. The singer tells his baby the story of his day, and she reacts negatively towards him, calling him a big dumbbell and telling him to leave. The man is left alone and with nothing, but he acknowledges that he's finally found the right place, but on the wrong day, revealing how life is often about timing and the unforeseen difficulties that come with it.

"That's The Way It Goes" serves as a reminder that life has its ups and downs, and sometimes things just don't go our way, no matter how hard we try. Despite this, the song maintains an optimistic tone, suggesting that we must keep pushing through these obstacles until we find the right timing and circumstance. Ultimately, the song shows us that although life can be tough, we have the power to make the best of it, find joy and happiness in unexpected places.

The above pic of King Richard and the Knights show the band's original members: (left to right - Gary Butler on bass, (not seen) William "Corky" Anderson on drums, Dick Stewart on lead guitar, and Larry Longmire on rhythm guitar (circa Alb., NM 1961). The only living member as of 2016 is Dick Stewart, age 76. He's still performing and recording with his sons, Jason and Ritch and his second book "A Time of Innocence" is being released by Page Publishing out of New York City. Sadly, Butler and Longmire passed away from cancer, and Anderson had a fatal heart attack.  For more information on this band and other Lance Records recording artists, go to www.lancerecords.com.
