Lola
Kinks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met her in a club down in North Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola
See-O-L-A cola.

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance.
I asked her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walk like a woman and talk like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Well, we drank champagne and danced all night,
Under electric candlelight,
She picked me up and sat me on her knee,
And said, "Little boy won't you come home with me?"

Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
But when I looked in her eyes,
Well I almost fell for my Lola,
Lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Lola lo lo lo lo Lola lo lo lo lo Lola

I pushed her away. I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees.
I looked at her, and she at me.

Well that's the way that I want it to stay.
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola.
Lo lo lo lo Lola.

Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
Except for Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.

Well I left home just a week before,
And I've never ever kissed a woman before,
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
And said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man."

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man,
And so is Lola.
Lo lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.

Lola lo lo lo lo Lola. Lola lo lo lo lo Lola

(Repeat and fade)

Overall Meaning

The Kinks' song, Lola, tells the story of a man who meets a woman named Lola at a club in North Soho. The singer describes how Lola is different from other women, as she walks like a man and talks like a woman. Despite this, the singer is drawn to her and they spend the night dancing and drinking champagne. Eventually, Lola invites him back to her place and the singer struggles with his masculinity as he is not the most physical or passionate guy.

The song is significant as it explores themes of gender identity and sexuality at a time when these topics were largely taboo in mainstream music. The ambiguous nature of Lola's gender is intentionally left unclear, allowing listeners to draw their own conclusions about her identity. The song's message of acceptance and love for those who don't conform to traditional gender roles is still highly relevant today.

Well I left home just a week before, And I've never ever kissed a woman before, But Lola smiled and took me by the hand, And said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man."
The singer is inexperienced and has limited exposure to the world, especially when it comes to romance. Lola represents a journey of self-discovery and transformation for him.

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man, But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man, And so is Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.
The artist may not be the archetypal “masculine man,” but he’s content being himself and unaware of the societal pressures to conform to certain gender expectations. Lola, too, respects that and finds comfort in his authenticity.

Lola lo lo lo lo Lola. Lola lo lo lo lo Lola
The repetition of her name at the end reinforces that Lola is the true focus of the song, and completes the circle of the singer's emotionality towards her.

Fun fact: The BBC originally refused to play it. Not because of the "raunchy" lyrics later in the song, but for the first line. "I met her in a club down in old Soho , where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca cola"

That was advertising.

And that was forbidden on BBC radio.

They changed it to "cherry cola" and there wasn't a problem anymore.

So yes, the UK and the US speak the same language, but that's where the similarities end.

My mom has a parrot named Lola. Every time I go home to visit, I pull out my guitar and sing this song to her. She gets really happy and starts flapping her wings and screams “Lola “ 😊

Your mom sounds pretty cool - most moms don't have wings.
