(tom paxton)

He was a man and a friend always
He stuck with me in the hard old days.
He never cared if I had no dough,
We rambled round in the rain and snow.

And here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.
Here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.

In tulsa town, we chanced to stray.
We thought that we, we might work one day.
The boss said he had room for one,
Said my old pal, ¡°we'd rather bum¡±.

And here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.
Here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.

Then late one night in a jungle camp
The weather it, it was cold and damp.
He got the chills, he got 'em bad,
I lost the only friend I had.

And here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.
Here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.

My ramblin' pal has rambled on,
My ramblin' boy, he's dead and gone.
If when we die, we go somewhere,
I'll bet you a dollar he's ramblin' there.

And here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.
Here's to you, my ramblin' boy,

May all your ramblin' bring you joy.
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.

Overall Meaning

"Ramblin' Boy" by Tom Paxton is a song about a man and his friend who went on many adventures together, despite having no money. The singer of the song praises his friend, who was always there for him through the hard times. The song celebrates the joy of rambling and traveling, even though it can be tough at times. The lyrics speak to the deep bond that can be formed through shared experiences and the memories that are made along the way.

The narrative of the song takes us on a journey through various places, such as Tulsa and a jungle camp. In Tulsa, the two of them were looking for work, but instead chose to continue their rambling lifestyle. The lyrics suggest that they preferred to keep traveling and experiencing new things, rather than settling down to a life of work and routine. The song takes a melancholy turn when the singer's friend falls ill in the jungle camp and dies, leaving the singer alone and mourning the loss of his dear friend.

The repeated refrain of "Here's to you, my ramblin' boy, may all your ramblin' bring you joy" is a testament to the singer's love and admiration for his friend, even as he mourns his passing. The song celebrates the spirit of adventure and the value of true friendship.

Everything I’ve heard your band play I have lived through those times. I’m 68 years old now and I just don’t know how to put into words how great you are. I lived in a great generation of music and now you are all allowing me to relive that life. Thank you all for giving me a second life. I feel so blessed by your dedication and perfection to be able to witness the second coming of ROCK AND ROLL.

The thing I love about LLB is that they play their music in a darkened studio with no distractions and they perform without any theatrics. It’s pure music and performance!
