I Feel Pretty
Kiri Te Kanawa And Chorus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel pretty
Oh, so pretty
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight

I feel charming
Oh, so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I'm real

See the pretty girl in that mirror there
Who can that attractive girl be?
Such a pretty face
Such a pretty dress
Such a pretty smile
Such a pretty me!

I feel stunning
And entrancing
Feel like running and dancing for joy
For I'm loved
By a pretty wonderful boy!

Have you met my good friend Maria
The craziest girl on the block?
You'll know her the minute you see her
She's the one who is in an advanced state of shock

She thinks she's in love
She thinks she's in Spain
She isn't in love
She's merely insane

It must be the heat
Or some rare disease
Or too much to eat
Or maybe it's fleas

Keep away from her
Send for Chino!
This is not the
Maria we know!

Modest and pure
Polite and refined
Well-bred and mature
And out of her mind!

I feel pretty
Oh, so pretty
That the city should give me its key
A committee
Should be organized to honor me

La la la la

I feel dizzy
I feel sunny
I feel fizzy and funny and fine
And so pretty
Miss America can just resign!

La la la la

See the pretty girl in that mirror there

What mirror where?

Who can that attractive girl be?

Which? What? Where? Whom?

Such a pretty face
Such a pretty dress
Such a pretty smile
Such a pretty me!

Such a pretty me!

I feel stunning
And entrancing
Feel like running and dancing for joy

For I'm loved
By a pretty wonderful boy!

I will never forget the day i saw "West Side Story". But the moment when this song "I feel pretty" appeared, it made me feel lighther and captivated, but at the same time, how the composer Leonard Bernstein congratulates the singer for their contribution in this songs. My respects for him.

@vierajuh

I was in love with it, I bought WSS as a teenager (ate 80s.) And I loved it so much (and LB of course, because of his joy in it). O my god, I was dreaming of One heart one love as my wedding song..

@stefaniaponitz5738

Love it. I grew up with this version of the West Side Story as my mom loved the album. This song still gives me great joy!

@henryseidel5469

I grew up with the version by Rita Moreno, but this album is also absolute perfectionism. I have watched many Bernstein performances, and I must say each of them is a pleasure. Everyone who is interested in music should have watched Bernstein's early 'Young people's concerts' from the fifties and sixties, where he introduces young people into the world of music. Paedagogically absolutely great !!
Leonard Bernstein is a wonderful and honourable representative of American music, art and culture.
Greetings from Europe !

@stefaniaponitz5738

@@henryseidel5469 thanks for the recommendation Henry! I'll check the young people's concerts out. Although I'm not so young anymore I've just started singing lessons so I'm looking at music in a different light now, and I'm sure these concerts will be inspiring to watch 🤗💜

@henryseidel5469

@@stefaniaponitz5738 Oh my god, in your picture you are still looking very young. The 'young people's concerts' is a series of TV-programmes (some of them are still black-and white) , in which Bernstein does not only show examples of different kinds of music but gives thorough explanations on the background of the compositions. So it includes a lot of theory, but very well explained, so that everyone can follow. Originally it was made for children and juveniles, but of course adults may watch as well. Best wishes to you, and good luck !
Postscr.: How come you have got a German 'Umlaut' in your name ?? (Ö)

@stefaniaponitz5738

@@henryseidel5469 my grandfather was German. I'm Dutch so it's pretty close by. The picture is from a few years ago, I'm 42 y/o now so it's quite challenging to go into new endeavors but so far I'm seeing great results which is a lot of fun and it makes the challenges worthwhile.
