I Can't Stop the Rain
Kiss (1978) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night falls on the city
Finds me all alone
Makes me wonder
Should I just go on home

And I walk up the stairs
To see if you're sill there
Would you mind if
I found you alone

Then a cold wind came callin'
Strange how it knew it'd bother me
See the night would fade
But the pain's gonna stay
Makes me wonder
Have you ever made love to me

I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' strikes across the sky
Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' only blinds my eyes

Ain't it sad
When the only love I ever had
Just slips away
Right through my fingers

Ain't it a shame when I think of your name
The only memory I have is it

I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' strikes across the sky
Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
It takes a witch to curse that goddamn sky

I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
Lightnin' strikes across the sky
Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
'Cause lightnin' only blinds my eyes

Oh, I can't stop the rain, here it comes again
'Cause lightnin' only blinds my eyes

Can't stop it, blinds my eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kiss's "I Can't Stop the Rain" tell a story of heartbreak and loss. Night has fallen on the city and the singer is alone, thinking about a past relationship. They walk up stairs to see if the person they miss is still there. As a cold wind blows, the singer wonders if they ever truly had a chance at love. Their thoughts turn to the rain, which they cannot stop. Lightning strikes, symbolizing the pain of their broken heart. The singer reflects on the sadness and shame of losing their only love, and how it slips away like rain through their fingers. The final lines repeat the refrain that the singer cannot stop the rain, and how it only blinds their eyes.

Overall, the lyrics convey a mood of sadness, regret, and a desire for closure in a relationship that did not work out. The rain and lightning become metaphors for the pain of heartbreak, and the inability to control one's emotions or destiny.

This song was better than a lot of the kiss songs and should have been pushed up the charts.

This solo album should have gotten better promotion and radio airplay. There are so many possible hits with mass appeal: Easy Thing, Kiss The Girl Goodbye, Don't You Let Me Down, and this song. Peter Criss had so much soul and feel, great vocalist. Seems like this album was a wasted opportunity. 🐾
