Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The path of sin too long I've trod Lord I'm coming home
Coming home coming home never more to roam
Open wide Thine arms of love Lord I'm coming home
[ ac.guitar ]
I've wasted many precious years now I'm coming home
I now repent with bitter tears Lord I'm coming home
Coming home coming home...
Kitty Wells's song "Lord I'm Coming Home" is a powerful declaration of repentance and return to God. The lyrics speak of a person who has strayed from the path of righteousness and has been walking in the path of sin for too long. But now they have come to the realization that they need to turn around, to repent for their mistakes, and to come back to God. Through the powerful, yet simple, verse of the song, the singer expresses their deep longing for forgiveness and their hope for a fresh start. They ask God to open wide his arms of love, as they make their way back home.
The imagery in the song is rich and symbolic. The "path of sin" that the singer has been treading on for so long is a metaphor for their waywardness and rebellion against God. The "arms of love" that they seek are the open embrace of God, ready to receive them back into His fold. The tears that they shed in repentance are an expression of their remorse for their past mistakes and their desire to start anew. Through this song, Kitty Wells reminds her listeners that no matter how far we may stray from God, He is always waiting to welcome us back with open arms, and that it is never too late to turn around.
