Compared to the dreadful quality of the other versions of this on YouTube this is a huge improvement, so kudos for that. That said, I am really not a fan of AI video upscaling when it's used on footage this old. The "smeary" artifacting (especially in wide shots) and slightly blurred look is practically synonymous with AI upscaling for me at this point, and I find it to be really distracting. Of course, this is just my personal opinion, and in no way intended to be a personal slight against you or your efforts. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this, since I know you are far from an amateur when it comes to transferring, archiving and preserving video.

Being a 1970s BBC production it was almost certainly shot with EMI 2001 analog video cameras (the video effects likely done "live" in the TC4 gallery at Television Centre) and recorded onto a 2" Quadruplex VTR, so a (relatively) soft and indefinite picture to start with. I'm of the opinion that AI upscaling (when working with standard def sources) works best with 1990s era and onwards footage, once digital video cameras had matured enough and could capture quite a lot of detail in standard definition resolutions, and ideally sourced from something like a Digibeta master.

I can't say for certain where this BBC Four repeat was sourced from, but I recall reading somewhere that the BBC transferred a lot of their old 2" master tapes to Type C in the 80s and then to D3 in the 90s. For your purposes, given that this is an off-air recording, a capture of the MPEG Transport Stream from when it was broadcast in 2013 would've been your ideal source, but knowing what the British TV file sharing scene was like back then, I'm guessing it was a 700MB 640x352 25p Xvid... 🙄

AI upscaling is a weapon that can definitely be used incorrectly. I always examine and tweak parameters to ensure that it isn't doing too much damage to the sources I have available. I find it is the lesser of two evils: I could always upload the 576-line original, however youtube would only play that at 25fps (they need 720 or more lines to play at 50p or 60p), so upscaling is needed. And as long as I'm upscaling, might as well try to clean the edges with AI (with the model that touches picture detail the *least*).

I have definitely abandoned AI for some projects. For example, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank on this channel went through several iterations of AI, all mangling something in a different way, before I gave up and just upscaled using my older process (NNEDI2), and that's what was uploaded.

I hear you about the camera tech used, and you may be right. I will consider this in the future.

The source I had was a 720x576 file recorded digitally off a re-run a decade ago.... unfortunately they already deinterlaced it to 50p so I wasn't able to do that myself (I don't trust other people's deinterlacing; why YADIF2 when you can QTGMC?)

I hope I didn't come across too harshly, your work is clearly MUCH more finely-tuned and, by far, the least intrusive I've seen of pretty much every other example that started with a less than ideal source, I'll defer to your judgement and knowledge on these things! :D I actually had another question if you don't mind, are the SRGAN artifacts that I find so distracting more likely to appear when upscaling to 4K? I feel like the most egregious examples I've seen were always 4K, and the best, cleanest, sharpest and most impressive-looking examples were 1080p upscales. Is this an accurate observation? If so, is there some reason for this?

But a moment’s reflection, and of course the original broadcast material would look terrible by todays standards - and the fact this looks so good is obv down to what you’ve done - so well done and thank you. Although I’m techy - I’m not familiar with this tech and hence it’s refreshing to just be able to enjoy the output without getting bogged down with the process. :)

AI can only guess at detail; there is no substitute for starting with a decent source. The source for this in particular was still interlaced, which meant all 50 fields per second were intact, so a huge part of making this look good is just de-interlacing all 50 fields per second to 50 progressive frames per second, ie. 50p.
