This is an actual story that happened to me and I still can’t believe it -

For a year, we had a Chinese student that I became friends with and I had another friend in that class that was in grade 12. So, I forgot how most of this convo went, but it went a little something like this:

Her: is he (Chinese student) Asian?
Me: yeah, he’s Chinese
Her: wait, he’s Chinese? I thought he was Asian.

I think being able to laugh about our differences is a good thing when it's not done in hate. It also takes the sting out of it when somebody really does come from a place of hate. As an Asian person I do ask people what their ethnicity is because there are so many different Asian countries. And even though there are some characteristic traits that help differentiate the people, to determine their country, it still is hard to determine sometimes. Even for an Asian .

That's because "Asian" as a racial descriptor is pretty useless, as it even includes Indians that are more closely related to European cacuasians than to Chinese asians. There is also very little genetic diversity in East-Asia, like Vietnamese want to believe they are a different race than Chinese, when history should make it obvious that after 1000 years of rule and colonization that there's basically no difference between the average Vietnamese person and the Han Chinese majority. That's why Asians don't really appreciate the DNA testing ancestry sites, because all the sites will say is that someone that looks "Chinese" is from East Asia with a giant circle around what is basically half the world population since Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, and so forth are all quite homogenous in everything but language and culture. BTW, I don't think most people even understand what "ethnicity" means. Ethnicity is not a race, something that is in your blood and that is intrinsic to you. If a black person is born and raised in Japan, they are "ethnically Japanese" but they aren't racially "East-Asian". Ethnicity involves national or cultural traditions, which if you're east-asian and born in Canada then you are ethnically Canadian, playing hockey, saying "sohree", and sipping your Tim Hortons.

When I was in elementary school, my brother and I were the only non-whites in the entire school. I remember one of my friends would make her eyes go small, but I never really got offended by that. I just laughed at her, telling her she looked ridiculous doing that. Another time, when I was in fourth grade, a boy in my class asked me why my face was flat. He had asked if it was because I ran into a wall or something. I can't remember what my exact response was, but I think I said something along the lines of, "Yes. I was running and someone forgot to hold the door open for me. So I ended up running into the door and now my face is flat like a pancake..."
And it's weird, because years later, in high school, I was talking to one of my classmates while walking down the hallway and as soon as the bell rang, one of the classroom doors swung open and slammed right into me. The boy that opened it felt so horrible, but me and my classmate were just laughing our heads off.
Another time, when I was out of high school, I haven't ridden a bike for so many years. My mom tried to have me ride her bike, which was way too high for me. I couldn't touch the ground. And when I tried taking her advice on what to do, the bike tipped over and I face planted on cement. My entire face got messed up and some skin had peeled off and I was bleeding everywhere. My mom was freaking out and I kept trying to reassure her I was just fine. She was like, "No you're not!"

You know, I had students do the "hold eyes open" thing to me, and also make fun of my supposed accent in Korean in a really exaggerated way, and I had white friends who were born in Japan but there are Japanese people who will just assume they can't speak Japanese, even while they're speaking it. Go to Korea or Japan, and the same kind of crap happens, but white people don't get it as bad in those places as other Asians, particularly SE Asians or Asian Islanders. They get it the worst, for sure. I really feel bad for Filipinos or Vietnamese people in Japan or Korea.

I'm actually not really complaining about the silly stuff people occasionally did to me, because I think it's funny for the most part. I'm more annoyed by the current political climate in which something you can't control automatically makes you a villain in the story, and the vengeance mindset behind so many social movements today.

This actually happens to my friend all the time. He's a Chinese citizen of ethnic Russian heritage (Russians are one of the 56 official ethnic groups in China). He was born and raised in China and speaks fluent Chinese, but his fellow citizens always treat him as a foreigner, even in his own hometown. Sadly, he's become so used to it that he usually just ignores it, but if I'm there when it happens I can't keep myself from calling them out. “哇，你的中文好棒啊！” “他也是中国人呢？没见过俄罗斯族吗？”

I had a friend from Ivory Coast who said the most obnoxious thing most Americans said to him was: "Ohh, I LOVE your ACCENT!" I replied, "well I'm afraid I do like your accent." Hahaha! I taught English in China and I hate to say some of the questions I got weren't TOO different! The best ones: "You're American? You talk so much like British.", "How did you get so big, you're such giant!." "Average American woman is YOUR height, really?? But your feet is bigger than average, yes?"" (No I didn't get mad. In the market I ended up buying MEN'S galoshes. All the shopkeepers were upset they couldn't find women's large enough for me. LOL When I went there to have new pants made, the woman I commissioned for the job laughed at at how my pants and skirts went up to her shoulders.) "How come you always wear trousers, why not colorful skirt??" The first day I wore boots on a really rainy day: "I see sometimes you wear practical shoes." (I DIED laughing internally) I coughed once at chalk dust when doing a lesson once and a student asked. "Do people get cancer from chalk?? That's what I heard. (thankfully no) The best ones though, the first of which I heard over and over the first two weeks was: "Have you married one of our Chinese men??" and when I introduced myself for the first time to some students in Chinese, one quietly said to me in private "Um ma'am you said your name but then somehow referred to your FOOT."

I've lived with japanese and vietnamese friends for several years. Most actually do ask questions like this. Particularly religion and ethnicity. If you can actually explain the differences between the western religions you get a lot of props for it. They also recognize that america is a mixing pot so ethnicity is not an uncommon question, and most orientals i talk to actual prefer a person to ask their nationality because each asian culture is vastly different. Also the fatness, laziness, lack of math skills and the annoying boasting/elevated self-confidence of americans is also brought up a lot, so this video is kind of pointless. Another common question is "you don't play cards? I was told Americans play cards"

My mother is Asian and she went to a makeup store to buy foundation, she is awful and English and found 2 foundations in packages. One was called “fair” and I forgot about the other one, she asked me what the difference was between the two and the fair one was lighter. She decided herself which one looks like her skin and picked the “fair” foundation.

I'm a mixed Korean/Macedonian, I live in Macedonia and it's a bit weird here in the sense that there are a lot of uneducated people here that don't know any better, since they refer to asians as "Chinese". Nothing racist about it, it's just that people don't know any better. The people that do know that there is more to Asia usually never ask me where I decend from.

Lol, I was in Sweden and met this guy. I'm Chinese and frankly, I just find the stereotypical stuff people say to me funny. I took World History in high school. One of the units was in ancient China. When we started the unit, the teacher asked us, "What do you think about when it comes to China?" Keep in mind my high school was primarily white. Half the class said Mulan(1998), and Panda Express. A quarter said something decent that I could accept like the Great Wall or Lunar New year. A few said rice, and I was offended(one of the staple foods of the whole world to be frank). One person who offended me and made me laugh said Genghis Khan The MONGOLIAN Emperor. One person started talking to me in Mandarin. I took a class in 1st and 2nd grade but could not remember much from those classes so the dialect is different but the characters are the same with the same meaning. I told them I don't speak Mandarin and they said, "You're Chinese, and you can't speak Chinese?!" I told them, I don't speak MANDARIN, but I speak Cantonese which is a different dialect. The things people will say to you...minus well make a joke out of it lol.

That was funny and enlightening. I wasn't insulted at all. For over forty years, I went to Asia. I enjoyed interacting with people. And I enjoyed experiencing their cultures as much as possible, no matter how much they stared or pointed at me or cussed at me. Yes, that happens in Asia. And no, I had no idea what they were saying to me, but their negative attitudes were clear. (Maybe I'll post a YouTube video of a Chinese guy cussing me out in Nantong because I was with my Chinese girlfriend). Asian kids were great. Always smiling, staring, pointing, waving and saying, "hello" if they could. People all around the world are very similar. Everyone should chill out and accept that differences will be noticed. Don't let it bother you. And don't let it stop you from going anywhere or trying to enjoy life.
