If Only
LIVING ROOM - Queens Of The Stone Age Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If it gets you down, well, then I'll take it
If it gets you up, well, I don't want it
It let you down so broken-hearted
If it gets you down, well, then I want it

If only, only
If only, only
If only, only
If only, only
We're nothing at all

So blow our mind and make it lazy
Those long, long days with no escaping
I hold the wheel to let it go
Don't want to stop, don't want to know
If it gets you down, well, just don't blame me

If only, only
If only, only
If only, only
If only, only
If only, only
If only, only
If only, only

If only, only
We're nothing at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "If Only" by Queens of the Stone Age seem to depict a complex and somewhat contradictory relationship between the singer and someone else. The song suggests that the singer is willing to bear the burdens of the other person, stating "If it gets you down, well, then I'll take it." This implies a sense of selflessness and a willingness to support and comfort the other person. However, the singer also expresses a reluctance to embrace anything that provides joy or upliftment to the other person, stating "If it gets you up, well, I don't want it." This indicates a potential fear of vulnerability or an avoidance of being hurt again.

The recurring phrase "If only, only" reflects a sense of longing or regret. It seems as though the singer is yearning for something more or wishing that things were different. However, the line "We're nothing at all" suggests a sense of resignation or acceptance of their current situation. They might feel that their relationship lacks substance or fulfillment.

The second verse introduces a feeling of monotony or stagnation, as the lyrics describe "long, long days with no escaping." The mention of "blow our mind and make it lazy" could be interpreted as a desire for an escape or distraction from the mundane routine. The line "I hold the wheel to let it go" could signify a desire to relinquish control and surrender to the unknown. Yet, the singer confesses that they do not want to stop or know what lies ahead, potentially highlighting their fear of change or the unfamiliar.

Overall, "If Only" explores themes of longing, the complexities of relationships, and the struggle between desiring connection and avoiding vulnerability.

Something like a couple years ago, on my work driving. I started to hear a song, that I though... That's an AWESOME track!
I didn't know the band!

My work friend, who is an musician, knowed the band and the song. It was No One Knows, by... You quessed it, Queens Of The Stone age.

Now, I like to sing Karaoke. If I'm good or not, doesn't matter to me ;)
I learned to sing the song...
That's beside the point, but anyway. I started to listen their other songs...

And I have hated them all... :(
I have seen people, who say this is the best band on world. So, I'm in minority...
I haven't found another of their song, that I would like.
And that's a bummer!

@Joey JonesIts far from disco, dude. Its not so polished, either. We're definitely nit listening to the same song. Its raw, garage-y and rock.

@Joey Jones Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so here’s mine: If you’re a “HUGE” fan you should never be disappointed when they release something new. Just sayin’
And honestly Villians 2? Nah, for me it sounds like Era 2. 🤖🐍 (Which is kinda nice to think about with the Latin/Roman themes and titles)

guitars are nice as always riffs are good but i hate the mix and sound of guitars after era vulgaris (perfect guitars) the tone has gone worse and worse.. its like they (he) are trying to get something like a modern sound??? but modern sound is shit?? i don't know i feel this album is gonna suck. for me at least of course... the song is mid

Yes!

I've always liked the Queens sort of sloppy but cool tone, but on the new track the guitars have some sort of weird effect going on.. like the engineer intentionally mixed it to be very low resolution and irritating. Could be something went wrong in uploading or the wrong track version was used.
