Suicide is Painless
Lady Bird Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see
that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
the game of life is hard to play
I'm going to lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grow stronger, watch it grin
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
"is it to be or not to be?"
And I replied: "oh, why ask me?"
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
And you can do the same thing if you please
The opening lines of Lady Bird's song Suicide Is Painless sets the tone for the entire song. The singer envisions the future and sees only pain and suffering. The words "the pains that are withheld for me" suggests that the singer is holding back the pain but knows that it's there waiting for them. The singer realizes that suicide is an option that will bring about an end to the pain they fear.
The chorus of the song is a repeated refrain. "Suicide is painless, it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please." The singer uses this chorus to express their resignation towards life. They feel they don't have the power to control their fate; whether they live or die doesn't matter.
The third verse introduces the metaphor of the "sword of time," which will inevitably bring death. The singer acknowledges the inevitability of death but seems to suggest that suicide would spare them the agony of prolonged suffering.
One interesting fact about the song is that it was written for the movie M*A*S*H. The music was composed by Johnny Mandel, and the lyrics were penned by director Robert Altman's 14-year-old son, Michael, who was paid $1,000 for the job. Another fascinating fact is that the song was originally called "The Suicide Is Painless." The producers of the film thought that it was too morose and dropped the "The" from the title.
The song was later recorded and released by an American band called The Mash, which consisted of session musicians who played on the M*A*S*H soundtrack. Since its release, the song has been covered numerous times by various artists. One of the most popular renditions was recorded by the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers for the soundtrack of the film "Theme from M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless) is the only instrumental song ever to reach number one in the UK charts.
Another interesting fact is that despite the popularity of the song, the original version from the M*A*S*H soundtrack was never released as a single. However, the instrumental version of the song performed by the group The Mash reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1970.
The original lyrics to the song contained a verse that was deemed too controversial to include in the film. The verse discussed the role of doctors in prolonging suffering and ended with the line "The game of life is hard to play, I'm gonna lose it anyway."
The chords for Suicide is Painless (Lady Bird version) are as follows:
Verse: Em - G - D - A
Chorus: G - A - Em
Bridge: Em - A - D - A
Overall, the song Suicide Is Painless is a representation of the feelings of hopelessness and despair that can be all-consuming during periods of intense emotional pain. The singer accepts the inevitability of death but suggests that suicide is a way to bypass the agony of prolonged suffering. The song is a reminder of the fragility of human life and a call to approach those who may be experiencing such profound emotions with compassion and understanding.

I realize and I can see
I'm aware of what's coming, even if I can't see it yet
that suicide is painless
The idea of ending my own life seems less painful than what's coming

Suicide would change everything
And I can take or leave it if I please
But ultimately, it's my choice whether or not to go through with it
the game of life is hard to play

I'm going to lose it anyway
No matter what, I'm going to end up losing

At some point, I'll accept that I can't win
So this is all I have to say
In the end, there's not much else to express
The sword of time will pierce our skins
Time will eventually wear us down
It doesn't hurt when it begins

But as it works its way on in
Over time, the pain becomes more intense
The pain grow stronger, watch it grin
The pain becomes a source of pleasure for time
A brave man once requested me
Someone else challenged me to answer a difficult question
To answer questions that are key
To share my wisdom on important matters
"is it to be or not to be?"
The question was whether to live or die
And I replied: "oh, why ask me?"
I didn't have an answer, because it's a decision everyone has to make for themselves
And you can do the same thing if you please
Ultimately, the decision is up to each individual

HAWKEYE: War isn't hell. War is war, and hell is hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
MULCAHY: How do you figure that, Hawkeye?
HAWKEYE: Easy, Father. Tell me. Who goes to hell?
MULCAHY: Well, sinners, I believe.
HAWKEYE: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in hell, but war is chock full of them—little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

"..A través de la niebla de la mañana
veo visiones de cosas.
Sufrimientos ocultos para mí.
Me doy cuenta, y puedo ver,…

This is a very quiet and gentle rendition of the song. I'd say I prefer this version over any other.

Beautiful. Death must surely be less painful than life. For some of us anyway.

/Suicide isn't cowardly. You know what's cowardly? Treating someone so badly that they want to end their life./
@ChunkyChest
you know its coming when the pain starts to make you smile

I keep coming back to this video and listening to to this song for obvious reasons and it always keeps me from 'doing it'. This just means so much to me, sometimes, it seems like the only stable thing in my life, that this video was here since long ago and it will be here... Which is pretty depressing in its own.

Back here again. Well. I just love this song so much! The song and particularly the line 'and I can take or leave it if I please' have become something of my mantra in difficult times. Because there is really an easy way out, but I'm the one who gets to decide if I do it or not. That's my definition of freedom.
