In 1999 Jazz legend Joe Sample collaborated with Lalah on the album The Song Lives On, which became a staple on both Jazz and Smooth R&B radio, as well as topping the Jazz charts. However, it would not be until 2004 that Lalah Hathaway would resurface with her own project. She had her biggest hit single in years with an inspired cover of the late Luther Vandross' Forever, For Always, For Love, topping the Urban AC Chart and reaching Top 40 on Billboards mainstream R&B chart, a feat repeated by Outrun the Sky, Hathaway's first solo album in a decade, which was released late in the year.

You and I have something
How I long to be around when
When you can see that
You and I have something
Come on, oh, oh, it's something
You better believe it
How I long to be around when
When you can see that
You and I have something
And come on, it's been a revelation, yeah
You've been an inspiration to me
And there is not one question, no
And my heart will run to you
Oh, oh, it's something
You better believe it
You and I have something
I don't wanna lose this time, babe
And hope you can see that
'Cause you and I have something
In my heart I can't believe we've been so blind
Looks like we've wasted so much time
There's not a doubt that rings untrue
Said when I'm with you
Oh, you and I got something
Come on, oh, oh, it's something
Oh, you and I, we got something
Come on, oh, oh, it's something
The song "Somethin'" by Lalah Hathaway speaks about the recognition of a special connection and the desire to hold onto it. The opening verse, "it's something, you and I have something" emphasizes the singer's belief in that bond. The repetition of the phrase "how I long to be around when" highlights the desire to witness the recognition of that bond in the other person. The chorus then asserts the belief in the special connection and asks the other person to believe it too.
The second verse takes a reflective approach where the singer contemplates the time that was wasted before the recognition of the bond. The line "in my heart, I can't believe we've been so blind, looks like we've wasted so much time" emphasizes that realization. The song then ends with a final assertion of the bond.
Overall, the song speaks about the power of recognizing a special connection and holding onto it once it's been found. It emphasizes the importance of being present in the moment and not wasting time.
