Ruin
Lamb Of God Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The knowledge that seeking the favor of another
Means the murder of self.
This is the resolution
The end of all progress
The death of evolution
It bleeds all life away.

Silence speeds the path to the streams of solace that run so few and narrow.
Brooks that babble the sounds of torture.
Sounds of torture
You will one day rise
To flood the banks of the chosen.
This is the art of ruin.

This is the resolution
The end of all progress
The death of evolution
It bleeds all life away.

It bleeds all life away.

I will show you all that I have mastered
Fear.
Pain.
Hatred.
Power.
This is the art of ruin

This is the art of ruin
This is the art of ruin

Overall Meaning

In "Ruin," Lamb of God delivers a message of warning against the dangers of seeking the approval of others. The opening lines state that seeking the favor of others ultimately leads to the death of one's true self. The resolution- the end of all progress- is the death of evolution, meaning the end of one's growth and development. The consequences of this are shown in the following lines- it bleeds all life away. The next verse warns of the deceptive nature of silence, which can lead people to a narrow path of suffering and torture. However, the chorus brings a message of hope, suggesting that those who rise to overcome these dangers will eventually be chosen.

The song then takes on a more personal tone, as the singer declares that he has mastered fear, pain, hatred, and power. He sees the pursuit of these things as an art of ruin, further emphasizing the idea that seeking external validation can lead to one's downfall. The repetition of the chorus at the end further cements this theme, as the art of ruin is both the resolution and the end of all progress.

Overall, "Ruin" is a complex and powerful song that delivers a message of caution and self-awareness. It shows how the search for external validation can ultimately lead to death and ruin, but also provides a glimmer of hope for those who are able to rise above it.

When I was a teenager I went to church with my friend and his mom. We hopped in her car and she found my friends LoG CD in the glovebox. She was like, "Oh that's so nice that you guys listen to Christian music!". We didn't say shit and she popped it in. Almost had a car accident on the way to church haha

My mom and I shared iTunes when I was in HS and she thought the same thing. First song she played was Vigil. Slowest calmest intro in LoG's discography probably. Then Randy's vocals came in and she practically threw the headphones. I was in stitches and almost peed myself.
