They Can't Take That Away from Me
Larry Adler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our romance won't end on a sorrowful note,
Though by tomorrow you're gone
The song is ended, but as the songwriter wrote,
The melody lingers on.
They may take you from me, I'll miss your fond caress.
But though they take you from me, I'll still possess.

The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away

Can't take that away
Can't take that away from me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Larry Adler's "They Can't Take That Away From Me" speak to the idea that even if a romantic relationship may end, the memories and experiences shared during the relationship cannot be taken away. The first verse acknowledges that the romance may end with the departure of a lover, yet the melody of the song will continue to endure. The chorus emphasizes this idea, with the repetition of the phrase "No, no, they can't take that away from me" as a reminder of the lasting impact of the memories made with a loved one.

The second verse expands on this, with the singer acknowledging the possibility that they may never see their lover again, but that the memories of their time together will always be cherished. The specificity of the details mentioned, such as the way the lover holds their knife, sings off key, and changed the singer's life, emphasizes the level of intimacy and connection shared between the two.

Overall, the song is a bittersweet reflection on the transient nature of relationships, and a reminder of the value of the memories and experiences shared within them.

Good sound quality,music,and some excellent historical background info on this special artist's life,that,like all lives,had its ups and downs,but came through in the end,in his case by moving to Britain...Just like this song's title says...

@OldiesAl

I saw Larry on one of his last tours probably 1998 or 1999, he was frail and sat in a big armchair throught but his playing was immaculate and his stories informative and hilarious. A real honour to have seen him. Even in his 80's he packed our little theatre to standing room only. No one else ever did that.

@IVORIESMAN

Love this Al - such a great talent.

@OldiesAl

I saw him a couple of years before he died, he came to Beverley Playhouse, a magical night, fantastic playing but his stories were amazing, name dropping left, right and centre and very risque too 😁😂😂

@IVORIESMAN

@@OldiesAl Al - do you think it could have been Larry in 1959 using the pseudonym 'The Happy Hobo' playing The Wanderer? I uploaded it some time ago.

@IVORIESMAN

PS. From memory that might have been round the other way, The Wanderer playing The Happy Hobo...🤪

Unfamiliar to me. Music to to nod off to. Bit of cat's meow and wash tub grinding tones. I may not be hearing what others find so remarkable here. Obviously I don't have understand the musical significance but I estimate that the historical value is substantial.

@OldiesAl

Thanks, Larry was a true genius. I'll give that a listen.

I am feeling a bit guilty as Larry has gone right out of my mind but he was so important to my life growing up on the BBC with incidental, popular, and classical music. Larry was a one-off.
