Wind
Laura Nyro & Labelle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine, that's your way
You always walked a step behind
So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name, for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

Did you ever know that you're my hero
And everything I would like to be
If I can fly higher than an eagle
You are the wind beneath my wings
It might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I've got it all here in my heart
I want you to know I know the truth
Of course I know it
I would be nothing with out you

Fly, fly, fly away
You let me fly so high
Oh, fly, fly
So high against the sky
So high I almost touch the sky

Thank you, thank you, thank God for you
The wind beneath my wings

Laura's powerful voice of an angel. This tune lifts me above myself. And gently floats me away in a gentle peace of mind.
Always will keep on playing your songs Laura. Thank you for your giftful singing. Memory eternal.

Bonnie Robinson

The finest songwriter of her generation. And a voice like an angel.

I just discovered her and I would like to have that album

Jon

true that - although this is a cover of a pretty unusual 1954 single by Nolan Strong and the Diablos. Like any great covers artist, Laura makes it her own.

Yup

There will never be another Laura Nyro, I was lucky enough to have known her music, her words, and how much she inspired me. No, Laura was one of a kind, a very old soul. I can think of no one since that can even comes close to matching her, beauty, soul and talent, her voice, her musical styling, so treasure her words, her songs and the essence that was Laura Nyro. My heart broke in April 1997, it shattered into pieces, I can only say, Laura ,THANK YOU and I love you, I will always love you

The pairing of Laura and Labelle was brilliant. The harmonies and amazing and hearing them do 4 of these songs on a YouTube video of the 1971 concert at Carnagie Hall proves that they sounded even better live

Laura Nyro -- The Wind,,, there is an evocative power of Laura's voice with a haunting quality I think because of her exquisite tone, pitch and interpretation of each word she sings .
The beauty of Laura's voice will haunt you for weeks after hearing her sing this song , but anything she sings is beautiful
I really do love this song, especially the way Laura Nyro sings it. She leaves her listeners spellbound and in awe. The Wind, and Coffee Morning maybe two of my favorites of Laura's Songs. She was way ahead of her time.
