You Oughta Know
Lauren Patten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want you to know, that I am happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theater?
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby?
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you
To be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
'Til you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face
How quickly I was replaced
And are you thinking of me when you fuck her?

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you
To be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
'Til you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed
That was me and I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes, and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else's back I hope you feel it
Well, can you feel it?

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lauren Patten's song "You Oughta Know" depict a deeply emotional and raw portrayal of a woman expressing her feelings towards a past lover who has moved on. The song explores themes of betrayal, hurt, and longing, with a sense of bitterness and resentment.

The opening lines, "I want you to know, that I am happy for you / I wish nothing but the best for you both," may initially seem like a sincere expression of goodwill. However, as the song progresses, it becomes apparent that there are unresolved emotions and a sense of lingering pain. The singer questions if the new partner is similar to her, wondering if they engage in the same intimate acts she used to with the ex-lover, and if they connect on a deeper, emotional level.

The chorus serves as a powerful reminder to the ex-lover of the turmoil they left behind. Despite the facade of happiness, the singer seeks validation and acknowledgement for the pain inflicted upon her. The lyrics, "Of the mess you left when you went away / It's not fair, to deny me / Of the cross I bear that you gave to me," highlight the resentment and frustration the singer feels towards the person who left her behind.

As the song progresses, it intensifies the emotional turmoil experienced by the singer. The lyrics depict a sense of desperation, questioning if the ex-lover still thinks about her while being intimate with their new partner. The final lines, "And every time I scratch my nails / Down someone else's back I hope you feel it / Well, can you feel it?" reveal a desire for the ex-lover to feel the pain and hurt caused by their actions.

Overall, "You Oughta Know" is a powerful anthem of empowerment and the expression of pent-up emotions after a failed relationship. It captures the tumultuous journey of moving on while still longing for closure and retribution.

I was lucky to watch her live in NYC, all hell broke loose after her performance of "oughta know", the audience erupted in applause and cheers. I'd say that the standing ovation at the end of the show was 80% for her. I wish there were an official recording of her performance available online & from abroad !

@farghifar

It's available on spotify!

@AlisonS521

When I saw it she got a standing ovation after this song. She was spectacular

@KingdomHeartsFan3211

From deadpan shock to anger to struggle to full-on rage. This is just perfectly acted.

@kirstythomson4043

something so powerful about how she sings the first section almost entirely motionless, deadpan expression.

@michaelparness2896

But you can see her slowly losing grip on her emotions on the inside. The initial shock of finding out you have been stabbed through the chest.

@5674inCincy

Alanis is pretty good about emoting during the song too.
Sounds much different today live today than the first decade she played it…so much frustration!

IKR!!! It’s so masterfully acted!!! And the chorus portrays it just as well!

@KuroDokueki

Yes. Their first section is so damn powerful, and it's by far my favorite part of the whole performance. Just because it's filled with such eerie calmness. It's a great example of the calm before the storm, that you can see crackling to life.

@zeynand4039

He is a great actor with such a great voice. She is going to make it anywhere with that talent.
