Nothin' Bout Love Makes Sense
LeAnn Rimes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like a cloud full of rain shouldn't hang in the sky
Ice shouldn't burn or a bumble bee fly
If you feel so happy, then why do you cry
Oh, nothin' 'bout love makes sense

Like an ocean liner shouldn't float on the sea
A pearl in an oyster or a circus of fleas
Someone so perfect can't be fallin' for me
Oh nothin' 'bout love makes sense

[Chorus]
Nothin' 'bout love is less than confusin'
You can win when you're losin'
Stand when you're fallin'
I can't figure it out
Nothin' 'bout love can make an equation
Nothin' short of amazin'
Wish I could explain it
But I didn't know how

The way that we dance
The reason we dream
That big Italian tower
Oh, how does it lean
Somethin' so strong shouldn't make me this weak
Oh, nothin' 'bout love makes sense

[Chorus]

Like the lights of Las Vegas glowin' out of the sand
A jumbo shrimp or a baby grand
How you touch my heart when you hold my hand
Oh, nothin' 'bout love makes sense

Oh, nothin' 'bout love makes sense

Oh, nothin' 'bout love makes sense
Oh, nothin' 'bout love makes sense

Overall Meaning

LeAnn Rimes's song Nothin' Bout Love Makes Sense is a ballad about the inexplicable and irrational nature of love. The lyrics repeat the phrase "nothin' 'bout love makes sense" to emphasize the idea that love doesn't follow logical or scientific rules. The song begins with similes and metaphors that demonstrate the illogical nature of love- rain shouldn't be contained in a cloud, ice shouldn't burn, and bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly. These contrasts are designed to reflect the idea that love is full of unexplainable mysteries.

The second verse continues the idea by providing more unlikely scenarios- an ocean liner shouldn't be able to stay afloat, a pearl shouldn't develop in an oyster, and someone who's perfect shouldn't fall in love with the singer. The chorus further emphasizes the idea that love is beyond understanding, a paradox that contradicts natural laws. The inexplicable nature of love is a recurrent theme in the song.

The bridge returns to metaphors and similes- the reason we dream, the leaning tower of Pisa, and the strength of love are all elements that don't make sense. The last verse concludes the song by comparing love to more unlikely scenarios- the bright lights of Las Vegas, a baby grand piano, and the sensation of someone touching one's heart. The song closes with the refrain "nothin' 'bout love makes sense" that exemplifies the entire song's theme.

She's amazing it's sad how the country industry dismisses her because of her personal life and pop crossover singles!!! She's pure talent and she deserves to be recognized for her amazing legacy!!!

I absolutely agree. Her talent is downplayed and should never be. She's beautiful, and her voice is mellow and so nice...

This song is under rated. It way better the more times you listen to it by yourself. Its like a roller coaster. I don't know what it is, but this is one of those songs that you have to pay attention to personally before it gets better. And you have to like country in order to like it. Its not a heart stealer like I Need You or How Do I live, but its good in its own right.

the whole album is underrated

I couldn't play this song enough when it first came out, but nobody else seemed to really noticed it for some reason. LeAnne is definitely probably one of the most talented singers in Country ever. This song is one of my biggest favorites from her!
