Summer Wine
Lee Hazlewood & Suzi Jane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things

I walked in town on silver spurs that jingled to
A song that I had only sang to just a few
She saw my silver spurs and said lets pass some time
And I will give to you summer wine
Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine
Ohhh-oh summer wine

My eyes grew heavy and my lips they could not speak
I tried to get up but I couldn't find my feet
She reassured me with an unfamiliar line
And then she gave to me more summer wine
Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine
Mmm-mm summer wine

When I woke up the sun was shining in my eyes
My silver spurs were gone my head felt twice its size
She took my silver spurs a dollar and a dime
And left me cravin' for more summer wine
Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time

And I will give to you summer wine
Mmm-mm summer wine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lee Hazlewood's song Summerwine tell the story of a man who meets a woman and spends a summer with her, drinking wine and enjoying each other's company. The song opens with the man describing his ideal summer wine, made from the sweetness of strawberries and cherries and an angel's kiss in springtime. He walks into town wearing silver spurs that jingle to a tune he had only sung to a few, and catches the eye of the woman who invites him to pass some time with her, promising to give him summer wine.

As the two of them spend more time together, the man grows increasingly intoxicated by the wine and his companion's charms. By the second verse, his eyes have grown heavy and his lips cannot speak, but he is reassured by the woman's unfamiliar words, and she gives him more summer wine. In the final verse, the man wakes up the next morning to find his silver spurs and some of his money missing, but he is left yearning for more of the intoxicating summer wine.

The lyrics of the song evoke the carefree spirit of summertime, as well as the seductive allure of alcohol and youthful romance. The imagery of strawberries, cherries, and an angel's kiss in springtime is particularly effective in painting a picture of a perfect summer day filled with sweetness and light.

I like Suzi's voice on this song. Lee was a bad boy by letting Nancy sing it with him !

Beautiful original version with a bossa nova flavour. Nancy's version has more strings and a great horn section after the third verse. This one has that authentic western feel.

I think both Nancy and Suzi do an excellent rendition but what really sets Lee and Nancy's version apart is the beautiful orchestration.
