Why Can't We Make Things Work
Lee Mead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't like you.
But oh I love you so...
Much that I hate you.
I can't let you go my friend.

If I don't need,
Then why do I plead you so...
Much to please leave me?
I just want you back again.

Why can't we make things work?
Why can't, why can't we make things work?
Tell me, why can't we lose this hurt?
True love. Girl, you're my last and first.

If I don't want you,
Then why do I need you to know
That I can't see you
With anyone else again?

Why can't we make things work?
Why can't, why can't we make things work?
Tell me, why can't we lose this hurt?
True love. Girl, you're my last and first.

If you don't feel it
Like I feel it,
Can we just throw it all away?
If you don't feel it,
I just can't steal it.
I'm giving back your heart today.

Oh oh oh.
Yeah...
Yeah...

Why can't we make things work?
Why can't, why can't we make things work?
Tell me, why can't we lose this hurt?
True love. Girl, you're my last and first.

Why can't we make things work?
Why can't, why can't we make things work?
Tell me, why can't we lose this hurt?
True love. Girl, you're my last and first.

Why can't we make things work? (repeat to fade)

Overall Meaning

Lee Mead's Why Can't We Make Things Work is a poignant ballad about the struggle to let go of a relationship that has deteriorated, yet the strong desire to hold on to the hope of reconciliation. The opening line of the song, "I don't like you. But oh I love you so much that I hate you," conveys the complexity of emotions that the singer is experiencing. He loves the other person but dislikes their behavior or the situation, leading to resentment and a shared history that is difficult to forget.

As the song progresses, the singer questions himself, asking why he is pleading for the other person to stay when he doesn't need them. He reveals that he wants the other person back despite not liking them, and that he cannot see them with anybody else. He hopes to make things work but cannot comprehend why things have gone wrong in the first place.

Amidst the pain and confusion, the singer acknowledges the pain caused by love and the hurt that needs to be overcome. He declares that the other person is "my last and first," indicating that he sees a future with them and that they hold a special place in his life.

Overall, the song explores the struggles of moving on from a relationship while holding on to hope and the desire to make things work.

I can't stop playing this song. It's so soulful and melodic, just like every Gregg Anderson record!

Can anybody imagine how cool it would have been to have most of those songs Gregg wrote for other artists done with the New Radicals? We would have had a Greatist Hits compilation by now, of course, Mr. Alexander probably would have been against that...

Yeah, "A Love Like That" is a great song. So much passion--isn't it tragic that he didn't have any. Maybe he just approached the tour the wrong way. He lost the energy because he became disillusioned with the "business"--he seems more like a romantic guy (not romance romantic, just life romantic). I wish he would release a hit every once and a while.

Yeah, same here! I was so excited when I found out about the "new" Gregg track that started going around... "Love Like That" and his demo to "Game of Love"!It was great to hear his unmistakable voice again after so long...!

i found this because i saw "old news" that gregg alexander, the guy from new radicals, had a new song... well, something that is finally given to the world... GOD. i want him (and i mean Gregg, the author of this song) to return and give us more music... this guy's music is just...so right, so true, so full of feelings, the kind of feelings that take your mind off things and make the world a better place. And this is one of those songs :)
