Where Are We Runnin'
Lenny Kravitz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
High speed
On the grind
24/7
No time, always runnin' here and there
Chasin' the money
So much jibber-jabber's cloggin' up our soul
We need some time to clear our head
(Where are we runnin'?)
Keep on workin' 'til we're dead
(Where are we runnin'?)
Ooh-wee-ooh-wee-ooh
Where are we runnin' now?
In style
Profile
Got to buy
The new Cavalli
Keep the skin tight and the booty in the air
Don't stop the party
The road is paved but narrow
I hope we all get home
(Where are we runnin'?)
We need some time to clear our head
(Where are we runnin'?)
Keep on workin' 'til we're dead
(Where are we runnin'?)
Ooh-wee-ooh-wee-ooh
Where are we runnin' now?
Where you runnin', girl?
I see you up there
Oh, you up on that stage
You up there
I saw ya!
(Where are we runnin'?)
We need some time to clear our head
(Where are we runnin'?)
Keep on workin' 'til we're dead
(Where are we runnin'?)
Ooh-wee-ooh-wee-ooh
Where are we runnin' now?
(Yeah! Yeah!)
(Where are we runnin'?)
We need some time to clear our head
(Where are we runnin'?)
We keep on workin' 'til we're dead!
(Where are we runnin'?)
Ooh-wee-ooh-wee-ooh
Where are we runnin' now?
(Yeah! Yeah!)
(Where are we runnin'?)
(Whoo!)
(Where are we runnin'?)
(Where are we runnin'?)
Ooh-wee-ooh-wee-ooh
(Where are we runnin'?)
The lyrics to Lenny Kravitz's Where Are We Runnin' paint the picture of a restless society with its members always on the go, chasing money and material possessions, and trying to keep up with trends and high standards in order to stay relevant. The repeated question of "Where are we runnin'?" reflects a sense of confusion and exhaustion, as people are too busy to take a step back and assess their lives. The song touches on the idea that people have lost touch with what really matters in life and have become consumed by the pressures of society.
The first verse of the song is about the fast-paced lifestyle that people have adopted, where they are always in a rush, caught up in the grind of work and chasing after money. The concept of "jibber-jabber" clogging up the soul implies that people have become overwhelmed with meaningless chatter and that this has become a hindrance to emotional and mental wellbeing.
The second verse touches on the pressure of keeping up appearances and maintaining a certain image, particularly in terms of physical appearance - "Keep the skin tight and the booty in the air". The reference to the narrow paved road reflects the limited path that people are following, with little room for deviation or self-discovery. The repeated question of "Where are we runnin'?" emphasizes the need for people to take a step back and re-evaluate their priorities.
Overall, Where Are We Runnin' encourages listeners to slow down and take the time to reflect on their lives. It is a reminder that material possessions and societal pressures aren't everything and that there is more to life than the fast-paced lifestyle that people tend to adopt.
