Sheep
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air
You better watch out
There may be dogs about
I've looked over Jordan and I have seen
Things are not what they seem
What do you get for pretending the danger's not real
Meek and obedient, you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes
Now things are really what they seem
No, this is no bad dream
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green, he leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives, he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo, he hath great power and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water
Blasting and bubbling, I fell on his neck with a scream
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream
Have you heard the news
The dogs are dead!
You better stay home

And do as you're told
Get out of the road if you want to grow old

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sheep" by Les Claypool's Frog Brigade describe a chilling and seemingly cautionary tale about the dangers of blindly following leaders without questioning them. The song starts off by painting a picture of a peaceful but uneasy grassland, with the singer seemingly unaware of any lurking dangers. However, the warning of dogs being around starts to simmer and introduces an underlying sense of unease as the lyrics continue.

Les Claypool sings about how it is dangerous to ignore the warning signs and pretend that the danger is not real, as the singer in the song blindly follows the leader down a well-trodden corridor into the valley of steel. It is only when the singer reaches the valley that they realize that things are not what they seem, and their look of terminal shock suggests that something terrible has happened.

The second half of the lyrics take a turn towards a religious theme, with Les Claypool referencing the bible and the Lord being his shepherd. However, instead of a peaceful and serene scenario, we are presented with an image of a lamb being converted to lamb cutlets. The song ends with a surge of energy and a sense of triumph as the singer dreams of rising up and making the bugger's, or perhaps the oppressor's, eyes water.

Overall, the lyrics of "Sheep" convey a powerful message about the dangers of blind obedience and the importance of questioning authority and standing up for oneself.

Someone said in some comment "possibly better" (than the original). That's the thing about all these covers. They're all "close covers" - mostly - yet not quite not trying to "pass" as the original and in all of them, they totally *own* the material. It's not the orig. Its not a tribute band cover. It's just really good.
