He'll Have To Go
Lester Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.
Let's pretend that we're together, all alone.
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low,
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go.

Whisper to me, tell me do you love me true,
Or is he holding you the way I do?
Tho' love is blind, make up your mind, I've got to know,
Should I hang up, or will you tell him he'll have to go?

You can't say the words I want to hear
While you're with another man,
If you want me, answer "yes" or "no,"
Darling, I will understand.

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.
Let's pretend that we're together, all alone.

I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low,
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lester and the Hoax's song "Hell" tell the story of a man who is on the phone with his lover, who is currently with another man. He asks her to put her lips closer to the phone and says that they should pretend they're together, all alone. He asks her if she loves him truly, or if the man she's with is holding her the way he does. The man is torn and asks her to make up her mind because he needs to know if he should hang up and forget about her or if she'll tell the other man that he has to go. The chorus repeats this sentiment that she needs to answer "yes" or "no" so that he can understand what's happening.

This song is a classic example of a love triangle where the singer is left feeling cheated and conflicted. He wants his lover to be honest with him about her feelings and whether or not she wants to continue the relationship with him. The mention of the jukebox being turned down low adds to the romantic element of the song, giving a sense of nostalgia for a time when phones and jukeboxes were the main ways of communicating with loved ones.

Jazz Giants '56 is my all-time favorite record. I've listened to it for forty plus years and never fail to find something new in it.--Jazz at its greatest. Thank you!

@nassar57

Does anything in this life ever get any better than the sweet sounds of Prez?

@helluvagun

He is NOT underrated he is maybe THE MAN among many of the other top tenorists like: Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon. You can't compare them - all you just have to do is listen and like(dislike) them for what they did(do).

@ConstantineAndreas

Lester Young. What a talent. Wow this song goes straight to my soul!

Personally I treasure Wilson*s piano, a superb sound quality and beautiful phrasing,not to mention, considering those years recording technology. Second or probably the most is Eldridge. His name will last forever with this play. Ali in all this is a beautiful milestone of this kind jazz. I love this.

I guess I'll have to change my plan I should have realized there'd be another man I overlooked that point completely Until the big affair began Before I knew where I was at I found myself upon the shelf and that was that I tried to reach the moon but when I got there All that I could get was the air My feet are back upon the ground I lost the one girl I'd found

The famous trombone player, JJ Johnson, was influenced by Lester and in his early days had memorized many of his solos. JJ would go on to become the leading exponent of bebop trombone but would never forget Prez. It wasn’t all about technique but emotive capability or feel. Each soloist on this record had that property. Thanks for posting!
