Out of Sight Out of Mind
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember your goodbye
And the late December sky
Seems so long ago
You were standing on the quay
And you blew a kiss to me
I was sad to go
The ship began to pull away
Then I heard a stranger say
It`s sad to see true lovers part
Cause sometimes lovers feel a change of heart
Out of sight and out of mind

Well the stranger`s words came true
And the prophecy went through
I knew it would change my world
Cause when I called your home
A whispered conversation
I overheard
I asked you what was going on
You said that I`d been gone too long
And the rain that fell in West Berlin
Was nothing like the rain that fell within
Out of sight and out of mind

[Chorus:]
Oh, Regine
Here am I
So far away
Out of sight, out of mind
Love has gone
But I will shine
Day after day
I will take what love I find

So I made some other plans
Took my life in these two hands
And I know I won`t turn around
Though I often see your face
When I'm in a crowded place
It doesn't get me down
I met a girl with smiling eyes
Full of love and worldly wise
She told me she knows what to do
To help me put the memories of you
Out of sight and out of mind

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In Level 42's song "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," the singer reflects on a past relationship that has ended. The song begins with the singer remembering the moment of the breakup, which took place on a quay with a ship pulling away. The singer overheard a stranger saying that it's sad to see true lovers part because sometimes lovers feel a change of heart. The encounter with the stranger foreshadows the end of the relationship, which has left the singer feeling out of sight and out of mind.

As the song continues, the singer reveals that the breakup was not entirely unexpected. In fact, the singer had felt a change coming, but was still hurt by the way things ended. When the singer calls the ex-partner's home, there's a whispered conversation that the singer overhears. The ex-partner is moving on and implies that the singer had been gone too long. The song acknowledges the pain of moving on from a relationship, but ultimately expresses hope for the future. The singer decides to make new plans and take control of their life, meeting a new person who helps them put the memories of the past relationship out of sight and out of mind.

Overall, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" is a reflection on a universal theme of love and loss, acknowledging the emotional complexities of breakup and providing a message of hope for those moving on.

I disagree. It's not bland enough to be a hit today.

This confirms it for me: whenever I hear Level 42 songs like this, the sound of their music reminds me of The Commodores and Earth, Wind and Fire! I LOVE this!!! I have an even greater appreciation and love for their music now, more than ever!!!

humdrum bum

I first heard this song (this version), in the summer of 1981 (when I was a wee teenager and when NOBODY had the fortune of hearing them), and it STILL gives me goosebumps whenever I hear this EXQUISITE masterpiece! Where have all the classically-trained musicians go? 'Cause LEVEL 42 are authentic musicians!

I discovered this group seven years ago, now I'm 27. I don't listen music often, but this group is my favourite since then, even though they belong a generation before the mine. Really amazing music, awesome musicians, especially Mark and Mike(really all of them), they have a cool and uplifting kind of sound.

I still love the part where they drop the bassline and mark's vocal during "oh regine," and just leave Mike's falsetto. Silky smooth!
