First, thank you for a great elaboration of your original comment. It truly helped me to see your point of view and you make very good arguments.

I saw it through the lens of how myself and many people I knew were conditioned at a young age. Growing up as a Black American in a very impoverished area, I had one of those overbearing parents that dictated a portion of the road their kids must travel if they were going to have a chance of gaining a successful career and moving to a different station in life outside of the ghetto. We were heavily conditioned to think of goals, that seemed impossible to reach at the time, and that we had to be 2 - 3x better than White people just to earn half of the rewards. I believe that mentality still exists with some Black people.

It is hard to argue against that coaching when your mom raised herself from welfare and the projects to being the first Black American to graduate top of her class at her University, gain a masters in finance and earn a position of CFO at a company. This was late 70s/early 80s. As I ventured into adulthood, I discovered my mom was correct. I was fired from a job when a new supervisor took over simply because I didn't have a degree to do a job where I had great reviews. I was not offered a different position nor encouraged to get a degree. I had male colleagues literally scream at me and told me I wasn't good enough to do the job that I was excelling at, had received accolades and awards all because they felt I wasn't on their level and I should not be better than them. I wasn't however I was taught if I could read, I could do anything (except what these gymnasts do :). One literally told me I wasn't qualified to do my job because I didn't have a Masters in Economics. It didn't matter that the result of my work was purchased from a prestigious trading house and it supported paying our salaries through a difficult time. It didn't matter I had a lower position and earned far less than he did.

I share my perspective only so you can better understand how I viewed the video and the goals they hope she achieves. However, I absolutely agree with you how people in America are judging people these days. I see so many criticisms of Simone for retiring from the competition. All they care about is what they want, not respecting that she may be doing something that is in her best interest. It truly saddens me that they love people when they are getting what they want but the moment an athlete takes a stand, has to back off from competition, behaves or says something they disagree, so much ugliness is revealed. As a Black American, it hurts me that so many have the attitude expressed by Laura Ingraham on Fox "just shut up and dribble." So here I completely agree with your perspective of the public's behavior towards athletes.

yes same here. i trained 25 hours a week and it was too much and i moved to a more chill state and now i train 9 1/2 hours a week

@e schwarz there is nothing wrong with choosing to play another sport. If you train as a gymnast all through puberty, it will stunt your growth. Being a tall gymnast isn’t easy but it’s doable. My comment was just referring to the fact that many young gymnasts train too hard and around high school decide to quit because of a lack of motivation or too many injuries

@Hayley Marse what happens when a kids physiology grows out of a sport? What if she becomes very tall? Assuming they had docs already project her height. Regardless, her fitness and mental determination are highly transferrable to other sports and future life in general

She’s impressive and a bright young athlete. But calling her a future medalist?? It seems pretty irresponsible. Don’t start betting on kids like they’re racehorses. You can appreciate her talent and dedication without measuring her value in trophies.

What a great comment. I couldn’t agree with you more. I think it’s fine to compete in sports but after the last Olympics Simone was a perfect example of how medals don’t define you. She was so professional, had great sportsmanship towards her teammates and all the other gymnast. It wasn’t the end of the world because she didn’t come home with 5 gold medals. She handled herself a d the situation with such Grace and beauty and is the best type of role model for young girls and boys. I personally will never understand awards like the Icars, Grammy’s, Tony’s etc. acting and singing are just jobs. We don’t have million dollar shows to give awards to the best teacher of the year, the best waitress of the year, the best truck driver of the year Etc. They’re just jobs too. I could careless who wins any of those awards. They are nothing but popularity contest. They have nothing to do with who the best is. Too much pressure is put on being the best and winning awards. If that’s the reason you’re doing it then the sport isn’t for you. Just do it because you live doing it no matter if you get last place or first. As long as you did your best or even it was a bad day. It’s ok!

There’s no reason a 10 year old should train 34 hours a week. It’s completely unscientific. Have gymnastics coaches still not learned about the concepts of pacing and recovery??

As a former gymnast there are so many events, more tumbling passes, beam, valt, bars etc. On an event we didnt get a break to stop and rest you get deducted points. I was in medical and covered both sports as well. Cheering has a tad break to cheer while on an event there is no break. I agree that 30 hours at age 10 is too much. I covered private gymnastics as well and was there for injuries ages 8 and up. It's too many hours for her body if she's going to keep going. They can increase her hours as she levels up and give her till she is 12. She will always have school/education to fall back on or if she chooses another hobby. She might be an Olympian one day as well we don't know yet. That's the major goal for many doing gymnastics or a full ride to college. It takes a huge mental and physical toll in this sport. The right coach and support system is so important which it seems she has.

I’ve done competitive cheer for 5 years now and I’m 13 and we don’t even train this much! That’s a lot for a 10yr old and their basically disregarding her education aswell ( I say this because she does school for less than 5 hours then trains for the rest) like what if she gets a major injury at 12-13 She has nothing as her back up.

@Flav F. This simply isn’t true Elites don’t train 8 hours a day that is not healthy.I know as my sister is an Elite and she trains 36 hours a week.Almost all gyms train 36-40 hours a week max because it’s simply not healthy.

I can most definitely assure you that once you reach Elite level such as Simone you don't train 34 hours a week. They train 8-10 hours a day Monday to Saturday, usually 4 hours in the morning 8-12 they take a break (in which they do school) following another 4 hours from 5pm to 9pm - Saturday sometimes only 6 hours. This is how Romania's always done it with their Elites, and Romanians coached so many of the American gymnasts starting in the '80s, they realized at the end that in order to get gold you gotta put in the hours. The reason they do this is that children recover literally overnight, 3 times faster than an average 20-year-old.

I'm really kind of tired of seeing these. It's a new girl every year and most of the time they end up quitting because of injuries, can't handle losing, or simple dislike for the sport due to pressure. Is she a good gymnast? Sure. Does she love the sport? Sure. But videos and claims like this are toxic and put insane amounts of pressure on young gymnasts. Especially in a sport like women' gymnastics where gymnasts are physically burnt out by the time they're 14 due to overbearing coaches and parents. Gyms need to stop cranking out 12 yo elite athletes. You're setting them up for injuries, mental insecurities, and you take all of the fun out of the sport. Also, helicopter parents: Stop.

@Maggie D Fair question. I am a former D1 NCAA gymnast, and have coached gymnastics for over a decade, including alongside Olympians at a few international gymnastics camps.. I have seen time and time again, amazing young ladies, such as this have their passions and careers ruined by PUBLIC expectations. This post has nothing to do with this amazing child, I want the best for her and she can work and train as hard as SHE wants to.

This post has everything to do with Other People. And those people doing a news segment on her and calling her a future Olympian at 10 years old. That's an ultimatum. That is not encouragement, but an expectation forced upon her. She's going to spend the rest of her gymnastics career thinking "I have to be an Olympian, or else." And that's where we lose passionate athletes into the mental black hole.

Just look at what happened to Simone Biles, She has a simple mental hiccup and the world loses it's mind. "I hope America still loves us..."-she said that.. She literally thinks she needs to win all the time for America to still love her... I'm simply just tired of seeing young gymnasts go through this and feeling like they always have to prove something to OTHER people. News segments like this - create that mental expectation.

That's my only point with all of this. People twisted it and took it for a ride though... I'm apparently a racist now? People really missing the point.

I don’t like the title “future Olympic gold gymnast”. That’s not the end all for this sport, and it creates a lot of pressure for these girls since people think if you don’t win the Olympics you fail. There are a lot of super talented gymnasts. Set goals, but don’t put all your eggs in once basket.

Wow, she must be level 9? That’s amazing at 10. She certainly will have a bright future at this rate. All I’d say is just watch that she doesn’t overtrain. Young athletes can so easily get repetitive use injuries that can scupper their plans. Look at Whitney Bjerken, everything on track and then she ended up having to take a year out, a year back, and another year out because of an overuse type of bone injury, which of course, allowed puberty to kick in and change her opportunities. But i wish Jurzie all the luck in the world, and her parents are great!

@Luisa Anna Zieglerova Because she was out so long, she fell behind everyone else and gymnastics is a very hard sport to play catch up at. I mean think of it this way, you get hurt at 12.5 and your our for a year and you come back. Now you're still basically where you were at 12.5 and sometimes, you can lose skills as well and everyone else has a year of experience on you. You throw in puberty and now you taller and your body doesn't work exactly as it used to. So now you're having to relearn your body as well as catching up and you make a little progress and get hurt again and miss another stretch. Eventually you reach a point where there is no way your body is going to able to catch up, you're out of time. That's why training as much as this girl is could come back to bite her. One major overuse injury and she could be out for a long time and not be able to catch up. You just can't say someone is going to be Olympian let alone an Olympic medalist at 10. There is too much that could go wrong between now and then and training too hard too young is a an excellent way to do that. And of course she wants to but she's a child with no long term understanding of what it could do to her body if she trains too hard. She needs adults to pace her even if she doesn't like it. Not just for her gymnastics career but also so later on she isn't a 30 year old woman who already needs a double knee replacement.

They say" she is at the best gym, so we will always continue to push her" every year they come out with another gymnast, the difference with her and Chandler, was Chandler's parents said that they did not care if she continued, they just wanted her to have fun and be happy, these parents might get upset, They say she will get anywhere she wants because she is at the so called best gym" In my opinion there is no best gym, you can be very successful but come from a small gym.. Simone made it to worlds( before her gym opened) at a gym that had barley any level 9s and no level 10s. she could quit because she has immense pressure, and her dad is sporty, it always is more important, that the child is having fun,then to push them and make them not love it 🤔

@udkel jdkla you know sometimes i find the public fickled especially when it comes to black children. I am not discrediting the points people are raising. I am not a gymnast so i am sure there is some validity. However what I did take note of was examples of her father being an athlete. The williams sisters or even the Jackson family. That generation that believes we have to work harder in order to compete in life especially in the US. The US where I see people with comments like your comment that believe they should override the parent having their daughter in a constructive environment. The same US that blamed tamir and trayvon for their murders or justify sending children to prison for life.

So as much as I respect the arguments raised, i don't allow those opinions nor my own to override the parents having their child doing something positive. That is the position i am coming from. I am sure you would not appreciate people demanding how you should handle your children if you had them in a positive and constructive environment because they disagree with you. You would appreciate the advice and warnings but ultimately you are the parent.

@Maggie D “it is not our place” yes it is, we are speaking facts in here, it’s literally science, if she continues to train like that she will burnout and that’s not okay, not even elite gymnasts train 34 or 36 hours a week, this is mostly about health, even if her parents think it’s okay and productive, it’s not, besides she isn’t even a future olympian, that’s an insane amount of pressure for a 10yo, who knows if she quits, sufferes an injury, or she simple can’t make it to the olympics because of the future generations that seem to get better every year, she has talent, but love for the sport is not going to save her from a permanent injury or burning out lol, our children or not, it’s not okay

Burnout is so real. It it can take so much less than 30 hours a week. I’m a musician so it can be different but I realized after my first year of college as a performance major that my performing arts HS experience resulted in burnout. It’s sad Bc I won’t be continuing to major in performance as much as I love it and as important as it is to who I am I just can’t do it anymore.

As long as she continues to have fun! I started gymnastics at 3 and thank God my parents never pushed me, were supportive and always made sure I was enjoying the sport. Another thing that is so important is dealing with losing and learning from those losses.

Oh she has such beautiful lines!!! I can’t wait to see her perform at the higher levels. I believe she will bring some of that classical dance style to gymnastics once again. I am a dance instructor, and it’s always so much fun to see the potential in the younglings! She has the naturally lean ballet body so she will have more ballet technique in her routines.

For my future child, I don’t think I’d feel very comfortable with them having a career this young. I’d want them to have a childhood, to run and play and going to sleepovers and birthday parties and just enjoy being a kid, because you can’t get all that back. Time is precious. They can have this kind of career or any kind when they turn eighteen.

It's a tough decision to make when you have a child that is so gifted in sports. You certainly can't start gymnastics at 18 years old. I think that it's okay to make exceptions for a prodigy. However, I am worried that this child is training a bit too hard for a 10 year old. But what do I know about gymnastics? 😃

Yeah let her go to sleepovers to have her refreshments spiked so the male in the house can take advantage of her like I saw on the news Lady don't let your daughter spend the night at someone else's house she has a bed.....let her sleep in her own bed. And as for as gymnastics you can be in gymnastics and still enjoy your life as a kid okay. I read an article about a woman letting her daughter go spend the night and something bad happened to her you could probably still pull it up on Google. Plus it's all about the child if she enjoys it and she's not complaining maybe quote" she don't want to go outside and play not every kid wants to waste idle time doing nothing with their life other than going to school, watching TV, playing video games on the computer, texting on the phone, watching TV playing video games watching TV playing video games and most of them after they eat I can bet you they don't have a 10-minute exercise routine outside in the backyard. Keeping Young Athletes in the Game! That means understanding how, when, and what to train and how to recover, based on an athlete's age, training history, and injury history. No Days Off goes against long-term athlete development. What would be beneficial is if Whistle would share the long-term development of their athletes over the years. For those parents who get caught up in the more is better philosophy, it is the fastest way to breaking down a young athlete's body. There is a better way!

While it's nice to observe this child's dedication, it's up to the parents to instill BALANCE. We know the saying "the heights by great men reached and kept..." however, to be real, we should also familiarize ourselves with "too much of anything is good for nothing".
Nevertheless, we wish this young lady nothing but the best in her future endeavors!! Take some time, however to "smell the roses" as life goes by real fast!!💯

She didn’t seem super happy in most of these clips, especially in the gym. And compared to the other videos I’ve seen about gymnastics from no days off, the kids are excited and talk more about what they do. She just seems overall unhappy with this and the parents seem to be most of it.

I thought the same..but I thought I was tripping and the mom added in about her being nasty to her siblings..why is that a highlight?? Again maybe it's just me but she doesn't seem nice..it seemed forced..maybe she is an introvert? I don't know

Go watch any level 9 gymnast at practice and see how “happy” they seem. She’s literally working hard she’s not gonna be sitting there smiling the whole time.
What are her parents gaining from forcing her to do this? They are successful already and have other kids they could be forcing to do things...
