I love how Abuella's children represent past; present and future: Julieta's food heals past wounds; Pepa's mood controls present weather; and Bruno's previsions see into the future!
Also, some people commenting on this post and I have come up with some exciting new ideas!
The thing is Abuela's grandchildren may represent the 5 senses: Luiza's strength is for touch; Isabela's flowers are for smell; Dolores's audition is for hearing; Camilo's shapeshifting is for sight; and Antonio, being the only one to use his speech and tongue to use his gift, is for taste!
As for Abuela and Mirabel, they both fulfill the same role of matriarch, which is to guide the family to stay strong and united.
However, Abuela represents the mind, for she oversees and controls everything in the family, while Mirabel represents the heart, for she is able to understand and fix the problem each one is facing.
So all the powers play out as if the Madrigal family was a single body whose mind and heart coordinate all its parts in perfect harmony: past; present; and future; touch; smell; hearing; sight; and taste!

Having seen the film and the fact that (spoilers)
She doesn't ever get a gift and only gets the "glowing door" after the house is rebuilt I would guess she is most likely her grandmother's successor.
Grandma is never actually shown with a gift, sure she has a door, but what is her ability beyond the candle itself? Because grandma is still alive, Miribel doesn't have a door yet. But she will once grandma dies. She will take the place of family guardian. That is her "calling" since she understood better each of her cousin's and sisters more than even their mother's could.
She is the new perspective of the family, and it would make sense for it to skip a generation since Bruno ended up torturing himself for his visions of bad occurances. Everyone always took his visions the wrong way and saw him as some "evil" person when he couldn't even control what he saw or the full context of it.
Miribel will become the guardian of the magic and finally allow her grandmother to rest. She has been leading the family and the entire town since her triples were born after all. And just like Lucia, she deserves some rest.

I love the fact that Dolores fell in love with Mariano not just because of trivial matters (such as his looks). She fell in love because he cares about his mother and makes her proud and the poetry he writes every night. What I love the most among her reasons is that Mariano talks loud and this is the first thing she said. People whisper because they have something to hide and since she can hear everything, she knows everyone's secret. Mariano being loud just shows that he doesn't have anything to hide and he's open about everything.
