I'm Leavin' It All Up to You
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm leaving it all up, up to you
You decide what you're gonna do
Now do you want my love
Or are we through

That's why I'm leaving it up to you
You decide what you're gonna do
Now do you want my love
Or are we through

Here's my heart in my hand
And I, I don't understand
What did I, what have I done wrong
You know I worship the ground you walk on
That's why I'm leaving it up to you
You decide what you're gonna do

Now do you want my love
Or are we through

Overall Meaning

In Linda Ronstadt's song I'm Leavin' It All Up to You, the singer is struggling with a relationship where she feels uncertain of the other person's feelings. She gives them the power to make the decision of whether or not they want to continue being together. The lyrics convey a sense of helplessness and uncertainty, as the singer has given all they have to offer but it still might not be enough.

The repeated line "I'm leaving it all up to you" emphasizes the power dynamic of the relationship, where one person holds all the cards and the other has no choice but to follow their lead. The singer pleads with the other person to make a decision, to either continue the relationship or end it, in order for her to understand where she stands. The line "Here's my heart in my hand" shows vulnerability and a willingness to be open and honest in the relationship, even if it means potentially getting hurt.

The chorus provides a simple and straightforward plea for clarity and a resolution. The singer is tired of the uncertainty and the lack of communication. The song ends on a note of ultimatum, with the singer stating that the other person must decide or risk losing them altogether.

Her powerful vocal range really comes through in this country type version. Powerful voice, much like Carrie Underwood.

I love love love love love love love love Carrie underwood equally as much as I love Linda and I'm younger than both of them. I've followed (basically stalked her from a far distance) Carrie since she was on American idol. The first letter to the first word out of her mouth during her audition for American idol I said we need to end the show. Carrie already won. She sang Bonnie raitt (another of my all time favorites) I can't make you love me and fucking killed it like she does everything else.
