Hallelujah
Lisa Lois Lyrics

That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Well maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not some one who has seen the Light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah... oooh....
The verses in Lisa Lois's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah begin by talking about the legendary David and his music, specifically a "secret chord" that he played that pleased the Lord. The opening lines suggest that the listener does not care much for music, but then introduces the ascending progression of the "fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift" that David supposedly played. The next verse deals with faith and love, as the singer talks about a lover who overthrows one's sense of reality, and the powerful emotions that come with it. The last verse talks about the nature of love and its consequences, and how it can make one vulnerable and broken.
The "secret chord" is likely a biblical reference to the harp that David played as he was said to have been skilled at playing and singing psalms of praising and thanking to God. The use of references to biblical figures and stories give the song an almost spiritual quality, further emphasized by the repeated use of the word "Hallelujah," which is a Hebrew word meaning "Praise Yah," or praise to God. The lyrics deal with themes of love, religion, and human vulnerability, making it a deeply contemplative and emotional song.
