Don't Look Back
Lloyd Cole Lyrics

When you're nothing to no one
And you're less than you can
And you're looking for someone
Who won't cling to anything
So you're stuck in some motel
With the sound of her sleeping
Don't you feel kinda old now
Well ain't that a funny thing
I used to wake up early
I used to try to believe
But life seems neverending
When you're young
So you're back on the highway
And there's wind in her hair
And you know that it's no time for thinking
About somebody up there
'Cause you'll turn her to drinking
And you'll lead her to hell
With her bottle beside her
She surely looks like an angel
I used to wake up early
I used to try to believe
But faith is never easy
When you're young
No no no
I used to wake up early
Now it's hard, hard enough to sleep
But life seems neverending
When you're young
Oh no no no no

Perhaps the "best" song on Lloyd's best album, in my opinion. I had the pleasure of interviewing him at the time of this release and meeting and seeing him live in L.A. (available on cassette).

Takes me back to my youth the late 80s my brother Desmond who was always on the cutting edge of music & life turned me on too him ..... takes me back good days like most youth huh 🙃🙃🙃🙃

Backup vocals by another great solo artist -- Nicky Holland (string & horn arrangements also for this LP). Cole is superb. Always is.

I'm worried that the always handsome Cole is going the route of the also once good looking Dave Clark (Dave Clark 5) in that as they get older they lose their handsomeness completely. Clark looks evil. Or is it that they simply lose their boyish good looks? Paul McCartney is hanging on by a thread. Meanwhile, Keith Richards looks like a rock & roll survivor. Maybe I'm being too critical. Yeah, that's it.
