'Round Midnight
London Julie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell,
'Round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
But it really gets bad,
'Round midnight.

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart,
And I'm out of my mind.

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing,
For your returning.
Till our love is safe and sound.
And old midnight comes around.
Feelin' sad,

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song 'Round Midnight' by London Julie capture the feeling of melancholy and heartache that come with being alone at night, especially after a lover has gone. The first two lines paint a picture of the night creeping up on the singer, who initially manages to cope quite well. However, as the evening wears on and suppertime arrives, they feel a sense of sadness that only worsens as the clock strikes midnight. The lyrics then dive into the memories of the past that haunt the singer, specifically recalling a quarrel with their lover that hints at a potential end to their relationship. The lyrics express the desperation of wanting to mend things and the pain of feeling like they've lost their love.

As the song progresses, the lyrics shift focus onto the hope of reunion and reconciliation. The singer pleads for their lover to return so that they can once again feel safe and sound in their love, instead of feeling lost and alone 'round midnight. The song ends on a wistful note, with the singer still feeling sad and plagued by memories, but also holding onto the hope that their heart and mind will be filled once more by their lover's return.

Overall 'Round Midnight' by London Julie is a poignant and emotional song about the universal experience of heartache and longing, particularly in the dark hours of the night.

The music plays in my head as i walk through the dark streets,
the humidity laying against my skin, ....
Somewhere in the distance a cat screams, a dog barks, trashcans fall and rattle down the alley.
Noone around except junkies and hookers and an occasional drunk that stumbles across the road trying to bum a dollar.
The black limo rolls by and slows so as to see who i am,
making sure i'm not a cop as he continues on his way.
The dealers whisper from the doorways, trying to sell their dope.
Once this city was bright.
Once this city was beautiful.
Families are gone now.
Its dark and dirty in the city now.
The music plays in my head as I walk through the dark streets....

For me this is the most magical version of this great classic. Her voice is so dreamy it just transports you to another dimension and the orchestration is just perfection.

Sheer class ... something we seem to have lost along the way. A 1940's/50's evening, dry martinis and a beautiful lady singing songs with magical lyrics.
