Actual story is the parthian general forced Crassus on a lavishly decorated horse, made the horse gallop erratically in front of his troops which forced his own surviving troops to step in. This resulted in a small skirmish in which Crassus was dehorsed and decapitated. After the parthians killed everyone they took Crassus head, poured the molten gold down the throat, and then used what was left of it as a prop in a play. Then they dressed someone else up as Crassus and paraded him around as a "captive" across the empire.

That's honestly a track record I have found with many netflix docs. They seem to live within the legend of their histories rather then the actually events. Their Last Tzar's show opens with Anna Anderson posing as Anastasia, the second season of Ottomons leaned heavily into the vampire symbolism for Vlad Tepes. And this show is no expection, especially the Caesar season. You know its bad when Horrible Histories actually got the history of Crassus more accurately then a Netlfix doc.

@@trak83eros60 yes some say they did this after he was already dead. That is very important. The more common story is that he was captured and used as a footstool by the Parthinian King to get up to his horse or taxidermied into a lifelike trophy.

In reality he just got killed in an ambush during a parlay with the Parthinians. Even the molten gold thing is a misstating of a myth.

Molten lead or tin might have reacted this way, but not gold. If they tried pouring molten gold down his throat it would have splashed everywhere the second it touched moisture, covering anyone standing nearby in tiny drops of 2000 degree metal. You can't even pour molten gold into a tray without superheating it beforehand, to make sure all the vapor is gone or BOOM. That's why I doubt this story's accuracy.

And he was known for his pursuit of glory when he should just put his feet up and enjoy living the politician’s lifestyle instead of going for glory one time too many. And for his captors, it would’ve been on their minds that he had the capability to bargain with them in exchange for living a little bit longer, but emasculated. So they didn’t take any chances of keeping him alive. Caesar was captured by pirates and they released him. Big mistake. Crassus was quite of a prick. He ruthlessly exploited his control over the only roman fire brigade to amass himself vast amounts of wealth and property. If your house caught fire, your options were to sell it to Crassus for whatever miserable price he asks (and then his brigade puts out the fire) and then become homeless. Where the hell came from that big swamp of corpses? Carrhae was fought in a dry plain, or else the Parthian cavalry would have been unable to maneuver against the Roman noob square. Crasus didn't die that way, he was killed by sword during "negotiations" and then the Parthian transformed his entire head in a golden piece, not only the lungs.

At the 0:20 mark, you can't melt gold over a simple open flame like this. The melting point for gold is 1,943 degrees Fahrenheit or 1,064 Celsius. More silly flaws in the documentary.

The Achaemenids never tried to deny the Macedonians their supply lines by using scorch Earth tactics and they always give Alexander direct pitch battles which is something he always excel at.

Yeaah so, regardless of the very real question of exactly how Crassus died, the depiction here just feels like Netflix attempting to make a historical tale into Game of Thrones. Of course, cruel and torturous deaths were a real part of history, but there seems to be a little too much enjoyment from the narrator and historian.

This narration is not very accurate. First of all, the location of the battle, Harran, which is on the border of Syria and Turkey today, is a desert area, while what is shown looks like European regions. And most importantly, the story of Crassus' death seems to have been created by his enemies in Rome rather than being close to reality. Because 8 Roman vexillums were entrusted to the temple of Anahita in Tisqon after the defeat from the Iranian army (Parthians) and in 20 BC during the peace between the two empires, the vexillums were returned to Rome in exchange for the commitment and payment of Roman war compensation to the Parthian Empire.
