I Can't Hear the Music

When I thought I had nothing else to give
God knows he wasn't perfect
Ah, but then, again, nobody is
He always told me the truth
No matter how hard it was to hear
When he said, "I believe in you"
Oh, each word's like a note, like a beautiful tune
The kind that inspires and helps me get through
Ah, if I said I can't, he's say, "You can"
He was my toughest critic, ah, my biggest fan
Now he's gone to a distant shore
And I can't hear the music anymore
Sometimes late at night
I forget that he's not lyin' next to me
He may be out of sight
But out of mine is something he won't ever be
Things that he said to me
Are still ringing out loud and clear
When he said, "I love you, baby"
That was music to my ears
Oh, each word's like a note, like a beautiful tune
The kind that inspires and helps me get through
Ah, if I said I can't, he's say, "You can"
He was my toughest critic, ah, my biggest fan
Now he's gone to a distant shore
And I can't hear the music anymore
I can't hear the music
Loretta Lynn’s I Can’t Hear The Music is a heartwarming tribute to a loved one who has passed away. The opening lines, “He showed me there was more to me when I thought I had nothing else to give” set the tone for the entire song. The singer is reminiscing about someone who helped her discover her potential when she was feeling low. The song is about how this person was her support system, her sounding board, her biggest cheerleader, and her true friend. The lyrics describe how this person always believed in her even when she didn’t believe in herself.
The song continues with the singer describing how this person was always truthful with her, even when it was tough love. This person’s encouragement was like music to her ears. Each word was like a beautiful tune that helped her get through the tough times. This person was her biggest fan and also her toughest critic. The song’s clearest message is how much the singer misses the person who was so important to her. She describes how sometimes she forgets that the person is no longer with her, and how the memories of the things he said still ring out loud and clear.
The final lines of the song sum up the entire message beautifully: “Now he's gone to a distant shore and I can't hear the music anymore.” The song is a moving expression of how much one person can mean to another, and how the memories of them can be both painful and comforting.
