Coquette
Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hear me, why you keep fooling
Little coquette, making fun of the one who loves you
Breaking hearts you are ruling
Little coquette, true hearts tenderly dreaming of you.
Someday you'll fall in love as I fell in love with you.
Maybe the one you love will just be fooling too.
And when you are alone with all your regrets,
You know, my little coquette, I love you.

Someday you'll fall in love as I fell in love with you.
Now, maybe the one you love will just be fooling too.

And when you are alone with all your regrets,
Now, you know, my little coquette, I love you.

Overall Meaning

Louis Armstrong's song Coquette is a heartfelt plea from a man who is desperately in love with a woman who plays games with him. The lyrics are filled with sadness and longing as the man, who refers to the object of his affections as "Little Coquette," declares his love and begs her to stop breaking hearts. He tells her that those who love her are "true hearts tenderly dreaming" of her, and that someday she too will fall in love and feel the pain she has caused others. Despite everything, the man admits that he still loves her and will always be there for her.

The song is a classic example of the jazz standard, originally written in 1928 by Johnny Green, Gus Kahn, and Carmen Lombardo. The song has been recorded by countless artists over the years, but it is Louis Armstrong's version that is perhaps the most famous. In addition to its poignant lyrics, the song also features Armstrong's trademark trumpet playing and scat singing.

What A Wonderful World - Casey Abrams - Lyrics

I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Singing how do you do
They're really singing
I love you

I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They'll learn much more
Than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Musical Interlude

The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Singing how do you do
They're really singing
I love you

I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They goin’ learn much more
Than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
I think to myself
What a wonderful world
