It's All In the Game
Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many a tear has to fall, but it's all in the game
All in the wonderful game that we know as love
You have words with him and your future's looking dim
But these things your hearts can rise above

Once in a while he won't call, but it's all in the game
Soon he'll be there at your side with a sweet bouquet
And he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips
And your heart will fly away

(Soon he'll be there at your side) with a sweet bouquet

Then he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips
And your heart will fly away

Overall Meaning

Louis Armstrong's iconic song "It's All in the Game" captures the ups and downs of love and relationships. The first verse acknowledges that heartbreak is a common side effect of falling in love, "Many a tear has to fall" before we find the right person for ourselves, but it's all part of the wonderful game called love. As the song progresses, Armstrong highlights the importance of communication and how it can repair relationships that seem beyond repair, "You have words with him and your future's looking dim, but these things your hearts can rise above."

The second verse takes on a more positive tone, showing how the ups and downs of a relationship can lead to moments of pure joy and elation. Armstrong sings about how sometimes the person you love won't call you back, but soon they will return to your side with a sweet bouquet, caress your waiting fingertips and kiss your lips. This moment of affection will set your heart soaring and make all the heartbreak and pain of the past feel a distant memory. The underlying message of the song is that the game of love is unpredictable, with moments of pure joy and intense pain. But it's all worth it in the end because it leads us to the right person for us.

wow...thats the first time i heard this...i always thought tommy edwards was the original...thanks...

@jaye501

+johnm893 edwards was first in a way.... satchmo wasn't first either... dinah shore and edwards first released it at the same time in early 51... but edwards first version in 51 was different from the version that finally became a hit in 58... i think satch and sammy kaye put out their versions around the same time in late 51... but even in 51 edwards early version was the best seller.... years later edwards wrote the hit song "hey there lonely girl" sung by eddie holman.... eddie did a version of all in the game that is outstanding...

@nancywood9531

Tomorrow Edwardsalso recorded it with lyrics in 1951. The he re-recorded it in 1958 which was huge hits number 1 record in USA and in UK. It stayed high on list of top 10 gor weeks the restislegedary history.
This is pretty by Louis Armstrong......but none had the "it" factor Tommy gave to it. Over the years many have recorded it as a cover.. Tommy Efwards made it an unforgettable hit. RiP. Tommy Edwards. We remember you and your hit songs.
