I agree with the first girl. You can't be selfish or cocky as an artist. There is a difference between confident and cocky. Cocky people don't know how to listen and always believe they are right. And even though an artist has to be able to speak to their art, it's THEIR body, and you have to make sure the client is happy with the work.

@Noremac 05 uh no he used a liner needle for a tattoo that big, that's mutilation, her first complaint was the healing process and the end result which was a tattoo that didn't do the one job a tattoo is always supposed to do which is stay on the body. He used unsafe practices, like what, he couldn't switch out the head of his needle on his machine to a shader or magnum and just taken a bit more time? No he was selfish and decided that instead of giving her a decent tattoo he would rush and fuck up the thing she would have to permanently wear on her body. Just gross.

You will find ample docos on how much reality tv has fucked people up since its inception. Even resulting in MURDER (that famous case of that guy that went on that talk show to confess his gay crush to an oblivious coworker, the guy at the centre of it took it "well" on set but then went and killed the one that brought him on). It did not turn out okay on that show, and there was no messing with anyones body.

I still don't understand how after 13 seasons so many people didn't figure out that there was always a really big chance they would leave with a crap tattoo (especially with overly difficult ideas or a lack of willingness to listen to their assigned artists). it just proves how people value being on tv or being cheap over having to sport an ugly tattoo for the rest of their lives. gotta get that story that you can tell over and over again at parties or at the office!

Getting a tattoo is definitely a full collaboration between the artist and client. At what point should the client take some of the responsibility for their "bad tattoo"? Not talking about any of these specifically, but a bad idea well executed is still a bad idea. Just because what you had in your mind doesn't look as cool on your skin as you thought it would doesn't give you the right to project blame on the artist. You got what you asked for. As the client, you had tons of times to think about it, you had time to hash it out with the artist, you had time to consider it when the stencil went on. You still followed through and got the tattoo. If your friends make fun of your bad tattoo and you get butt hurt that's on you.

I honestly dont think kyle was even in the wrong. The canvas goes onto the show knowing the artist is going to have a specific style, theme, and time limit for the tattoo and yet they arent willing to compromise. If you wanted a specific tattoo you shouldn't have gone on this show.

@ulu that would make it quite different from other reality shows. I have friends who've worked on them. Do they sometimes direct people to react in certain ways? Yes. Do they ask people to redo scenes to change something? Yes. Do they edit everything out of sequence to make it more dramatic? Yes. But no one has lines to memorize. They are all still non actors (clearly!) who are responding ad lib for the most part.

In one episode I lost all respect for her, basically she had to tattoo something that she didn't want to and the client was saying that they could compromise and said that he felt bad and all sorts, and was genuinely being like an amazing canvus. And she just shouted at him and told him to go f*** himself and more just because she didn't like what she had to tattoo that day. Then proceeded to talk shit about him to the judges saying that he was a bad canvus, and when the judges and all the other tattoo artist said that the canvus was nice and said that they watched everything happen she was in shock horror lol

@The Wonder I’m not even a Kyle fan, I just understand why the artists in the show get so annoyed when their canvases act entitled. If you want a fully custom tattoo exactly to your specifications, don’t sign up to be a human canvas for a tattoo game show where there’s a set theme every single week lmao. Common sense. Not defending his anger and the way he spoke, but some of those canvases walk in with a very entitled and sanctimonious attitude from the very beginning and that does not help matters at all. They know it’s not the same situation as booking in with the artists in their own studios, but they act totally unaware of the fact that it’s a game show. In Art a canvas doesn’t dictate to the artist, they should just be there to be a canvas or go pay for the tattoo at their home studios.

And you have to admit it looks awful. So if all he cares about is the money and not the quality of how his work holds up, that’s a problem.

I will always believe that what the client wants is more important than what the tattoo artist wants. Yes, you're the artist making the tattoo and you have a vision for your art, but you are not the one who has to walk around with it on your body forever. Whether you like it or not, your job is to make the client happy. If you wanted to be able to produce whatever art you want without anyone telling you no, you should have become a painter. By becoming a tattoo artist who is going to be working on OTHER PEOPLE'S BODIES, you must accept the fact that that person has ultimate say in what happens with the tattoo. You're providing a service that the client is paying you A LOT of money for, so as a service provider its your JOB to cater to the CLIENT. NOT your own ego. You might design a tattoo that you love; but if the client who has to have it on their body hates everything about it, you cannot force them to get it. The tattoo belongs to the person whose body its on, NOT the artist who did it. When I look at a tattoo I NEVER think about who the artist was. Ever. I only think about the person whose body its on. Usually I hate this phrase with a passion, but when it comes to permanent things that will be on their body, like a tattoo, I believe the customer is ALWAYS right. What the customer wants is most important.

Mike didn’t learn anything what a complete waste of time for everybody... even if he was the best artist and won the whole thing, I wouldn’t go to him simply because of his disgusting attitude. Sometimes giving someone a second chance even if you think they deserve it isn’t a good idea... I worked with kids on the spectrum for 4 years and loved it, I wouldn’t have given it to him, he didn’t deserve it.

This show is the perfect example why you should think long and hard about what you do with your body regarding tattoos, piercings, and any other permanent changes.

I have two tattoos. One I got about 5 years ago, the other I got three weeks ago. It will probably be another 2 years before I get my third. Because I think about it a long time……

I felt bad for that first girl. Having to listen to Mystical Mike's arrogant babbling while getting tattooed would stress me out too. For him to say it was disrespectful that she got the tattoo fixed by someone else without asking him first was just gross. She said herself she tried to message him about fixing it and he ignored her. If she couldn't get a word from him, what should she have done? Walked around with an ugly scarred tattoo till he finally decided to respond to her in 10 years? He's an idiot

The way sebation approached the idea of a cover up was really cool, to have them not think its a cover up but what you really want and he will do whats possible from there.

"Tattoo artists are selfish" I'm sorry, what? I'm in the art field and while I don't do tattoos or have any plans of ever going into the tattoo field, I do know the #1 basic golden rule.

If you want to be a tattooist, your art is never about you. There is no "you" in it at all. You use your understanding of art fundamentals and art styles to do 100% exactly what they want, line by line. You have absolutely no freedom. What you put on their bodies will stick with them for life, and you have to be so selfless. Now, many canvases will give you the right to wiggle room, but a few really want specifics. You have to understand that. Choose a canvas that you know will be comfortable with what you are. If you don't want every single line to be controlled by a canvas (obviously them being respectful about it), then choose a canvas that isn't afraid to allow you to be 'selfish' about your own work.

If you love art but can't stand people controlling what you give them, then go to digital art or traditional art and publish it online. There's still many jobs you can get by doing this.

Mike's problem isn't just "bad communication", he is a straight-up narcissist. He wants a "piece of him" in the tattoo and says all tattoo artists are selfish... they're not. That's a him problem. Also the fact that he threw a fit that she had a bad experience with him and didn't want him to be very involved with a permanent piece of art on her arm

@BittenBone I mean firstly that's not true, because artists bring their own equipment. But even if that wasn't the case, part of their job on this show is to adapt to different challenges, don't do a tattoo that relies heavily on something you're not capable of doing.
