When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Lowell Mason feat. Isaac Watts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I survey the wondrous cross
Oh which the Prince of glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God
All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood
See from his dead, his hands,
his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Where the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small,

Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my fire, my all.

Overall Meaning

"When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" is a hymn that is a reflection on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice he made for humanity's salvation. The lyrics begin with an invitation to take a moment to gaze upon the cross on which the Prince of Glory died. The second line announces the wondrous nature of the cross, implying the paradoxical quality of an instrument of torture and death becoming the most significant symbol of hope for Christians.

The third line serves as a statement of humility, emphasizing the worthlessness of any riches compared to the overwhelming value of the sacrifice that Christ made. The fourth line continues the theme of humility and contempt for pride, saying that everything that previously seems so important must now be laid aside.

In the second stanza, the lyrics shift to a focus on the death of Christ specifically, with a prayer that we should not boast in anything other than the death of Christ our God. The next line emphasizes the sacrifice that was made, with the language of the blood as the thing to which all vain things must be sacrificed.

In the final stanza, the hymn attempts to capture the magnitude of God's love and the glorious nature of the sacrifice that Christ made. The final lines express a commitment to love that is so amazing and divine that it demands one's soul, fire, and all.

Line by Line Meaning

When I survey the wondrous cross
As I consider the incredible cross

Oh which the Prince of glory died
On which the Prince of glory was crucified

My richest gain I count but loss
Any wealth I possess seems unimportant

And pour contempt on all my pride
I disdain my own ego

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
I pray that I never become prideful

Save in the death of Christ my God
Unless in the death of my God and Savior, Christ

All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood
I relinquish any worldly possessions that entice me to His holy blood

See from his dead, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
I witness how sorrow and love mix together as His blood drips from His wounds

Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Has there ever been such an intersection of love and sorrow as the crown of thorns He wore?

Where the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small,
Even if I possessed the entirety of nature, it would not be enough

Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my fire, my all.
This incredible, wondrous love compels me to surrender my entire being to it.

The believer believes all of the Word of God, (Matthew 4:4) he will receive the Prophet whom God said that God would send, to reject that Prophet would be to say that God made a mistake when God sent that Prophet.

In the following Scriptures God makes it very clear that God will send His End Time Prophet to “RESTORE” the understanding of the Bible as the Apostles knew it.

In this Scripture we are told that the Lord Jesus Christ must REMAIN in Heaven until the times of RESTITUTION OF ALL THINGS,

The word “RESTITUTION” means “RESTORE.”

The Lord stated that He would send HIS END TIME PROPHET to “RESTORE” the Word of God, as the Apostles knew it.

Oh, thank you for such a beautiful sound of this hymn! It inspires me to translate it in my natiive UKRAINIAN language^

Cinta begitu menakjubkan, begitu ilahi Menuntut jiwaku, hidupku, semua milikku

@alexandreperusio1303

@@meganbennett2144 let me try to show what I think.

The lyrics are poems, they're carefully made and with respect to God.
I know a lot of hymns done recently that are really good, the thing is, Is not the norm!

Obviously we are not in a competition, is just that is natural that after each day that passes the apostasy will be stronger, and from the christians will more and more appear opportunists trying to change the whole point of the Bible: Jesus Christ.

The most famous hymns of this time are incapable of saying the simplest message, that Jesus died and resurrected.
In this is our hope.

You can disagree with me, but not with the bible.

The bible says that the Christendom will not get better, only worse.

If you see a hymn that contains the truth, it will not matter when it was made, but for whom.

So, careful, is better to be in the fundament of the Bible and from this you can judge everything you see, be it old or new.

One question, do you think you're a good person?

@AbaloneWorld

This channel is a blessing known to God before the world was made. Ephesians 1:1-14. Oh Lord bless this channel. I will pray for you and those gathered here. There is a Crown in Heaven awaiting all who faithfully share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a soul is saved.
("JESUS SAVES" below) 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20; Philippians 4:1. " For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy." The Apostle Paul further testified; Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek".

2 Samuel chapter 22:verse 50 "Therefore I will praise you, O Lord, out of the countries, and I will praise your name."

Mark 16: verse 15: "And He said unto them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
How can anyone hear the "good" news? Romans 10:17 "Then faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God."

The Birth Of Jesus Christ
Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore the LORD shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel." Hebrew: עִמָּנוּאֵל, "God with us" in human flesh but without sin. The Savior of the world was born to die for our sins! He did so 33 years later. His terrible ordeal, the body was mutilated, the blood was poured out, but the bones were not broken, buried in a Tomb and risen on the 3rd day.

Isaiah 53: "5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all."

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
"I am the way, the truth and the life: no one comes to the Father except through me." John 14.6

1 Corinthians 15:
"1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"

"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;." Ephesians 1:7
“For he (God) hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5: 21.
Romans 5:8 " But God demonstrates his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, now justified by his blood, we will be saved from wrath through him." Matthew 26: 28 "For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." (the life is in the blood. He had to pay with His life)

Ephesians 2:8 " For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"

Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rescue us from eternal death. Because of Jesus' death on our behalf, all we have to do is believe in Him, trusting in the shedding of His blood and death as payment for our sins, as well as in His burial and resurrection from the dead the third day, and we will be saved! John 20:24-31; See 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4.

Romans 10:
"9 If you confess the Lord Jesus with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart man believes in righteousness; And a confession by mouth is given to salvation.
13 For the one who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Salvation and forgiveness of sins is a blessing of all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We receive the baptism of God the Holy Spirit immediately which permanently seals us in Christ. Ephesians 1:13-14. Those who reject salvation, "perish"(John 3:16) which means their sins are judged and they suffer separation from God forever called the second death. Rev.21:8

I am Chinese. By the grace of God, I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior at age 42 20 years ago. I read the Holy Bible and pray to the Lord daily. I now have true peace, joy and the assurance of salvation. I will live to glorify the Lord for the rest of my life. Hallelujah. Thanks be to the Lord my God and Savior Jesus Christ.

When I was a teenager, our church youth group would have a "sing-song" on a Sunday evening every couple of months. It was a time of worship through singing. Our Youth Pastor would often end those sing-songs with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" sung to this tune. Sometimes I would also help lead by playing my guitar, and I loved this version. It's the only song I remember how to play from those old sing-songs. That was around 1984. I don't know where the tune came from or where my Youth Pastor heard it, but it was wonderful. The music is beautiful, and the words are beautiful: Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

I know this is an old comment but just for anyone interested—this tune is from a Scottish (I think) folk song called “The Water is Wide.” Beautiful tune and I was so happy to hear it combined with these lyrics. I didn’t realize people were singing them together that long ago! Thanks for sharing.

@@EndtimeElijah Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
(Col 2:18-23)"

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
