Caruso
Lucio Dalla feat. Paul Potts Carmine Lauri & Simon Lee Lyrics

Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Confondono i pensieri
Così diventa tutto piccolo
Anche le notti là in America
Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
Come la scia di un'elica
Ma sì, è la vita che finisce
Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto
Anzi si sentiva già felice
E ricominciò il suo canto
Te voglio bene assaje
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
È una catena ormai
E scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
Te voglio bene assaje
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
È una catena ormai
E scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
The lyrics to Lucio Dalla's song Caruso tell a story of a man singing about his love for a woman while standing on an old terrace overlooking the Gulf of Sorrento. The man embraces the woman after she has cried and then clears his throat to continue singing. He sings about how much he loves her and how that love is now a part of him. As he looks out into the sea, he is reminded of his time spent in America and the lights out on the water. But he realizes that those lights were simply from a ship's lamps and not the grandiose lights of America. He feels the pain in the music and gets up from the piano. As he looks up, he sees the moon come out from behind a cloud, making him realize the beauty in life, even in death.
The man then gazes into the woman's eyes, so close and true that they make him forget his troubles and confuse his thoughts. Everything else in life seems small in comparison to this moment. He acknowledges the power of opera and the stage, how it can make a false drama seem real with just a little bit of trickery. But here, with this woman, it is all real. As he thinks about his life, he knows that it will eventually come to an end, but he's not worried because he's already content and singing once again about his love for this woman.

Un uomo abbraccia una ragazza
A man embraces a girl
Dopo che aveva pianto
After she had cried
Poi si schiarisce la voce
Then he clears his voice
E ricomincia il canto
And starts singing again
Te voglio bene assaje
I love you so much
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
You know, so very much
È una catena ormai
Now it's a chain
Che scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
That melts the blood in the veins, you know
Vide le luci in mezzo al mare
He saw the lights in the middle of the sea
Pensò alle notti là in America
He thought of the nights in America
Ma erano solo le lampare
But they were only the lamps
Nella bianca scia di un'elica
In the white wake of a propeller
Sentì il dolore nella musica

Those eyes as green as the sea
Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Then suddenly a tear came out
E lui credette di affogare
And he thought he was drowning
Potenza della lirica
The power of opera
Dove ogni dramma è un falso
Where every drama is fake
Che con un po' di trucco e con la mimica
Where, with a bit of trickery and mimicry

You can become someone else
Ma due occhi che ti guardano
But two eyes that look at you
Così vicini e veri
So near and real
Ti fan scordare le parole
Make you forget your words
Confondono i pensieri
Confuse your thoughts
Così diventa tutto piccolo
So everything becomes small
Anche le notti là in America
Even the nights in America
Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
You turn around and see your life
Come la scia di un'elica
Like the wake of a propeller
Ma sì, è la vita che finisce
But yes, life ends
Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto
But he didn't really think about it
Anzi si sentiva già felice
On the contrary, he already felt happy
E ricominciò il suo canto
And he started singing again
