Wynken Blynken and Nod
Lucy & Carly Simon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wynken and Blynken and Nod one night
Sailed off on a wooden shoe
Sailed down a river of crystal light
Into a sea of dew

Now where are you going and what do you wish?
The old moon asked the three
Well, we're going out fishing for herring fish
That live in the beautiful sea

And some silver and gold have we
Said, Wynken and Blynken and Nod

The old moon laughed and sang a song
As they rocked in their wooden shoe
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew

While the little stars were the herring fish
That lived in the beautiful sea
Now cast your nets wherever you wish
Never a feared are we

So sang the stars to the fishermen three
Wynken and Blynken and Nod

All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe
Bringing the fishermen home

T'was all so pretty a sight it seemed
As if it could not be
And some folks thought t'was a dream
They dreamed of sailing the beautiful sea

But I shall name you the fishermen three
Wynken and Blynken and Nod

Now Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes
And Nod is a little head
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
Is a wee one's trundle bed

So close your eyes while mother sings
Of the beautiful sights that be
And you will see the wonderful things
As you rock in your misty sea

Where the old moon rocked the fishermen three
Wynken and Blynken and Nod

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lucy & Carly Simon's song "Wynken Blynken and Nod" describe a dream-like journey taken by three fishermen identified as Wynken, Blynken, and Nod. The trio sets off on a wooden shoe that sails down a river of crystal light and into a sea of dew. The old moon asks them where they are going and what they wish, and they answer that they are fishing for herring fish in the beautiful sea with silver and gold nets. The stars in the sky are the herring fish, and they help the fishermen catch their haul. The fishermen then return home in their wooden shoe, which turns out to be a child's trundle bed.

The lyrics are filled with magical and fantastical imagery, suggesting that the journey taken by the fishermen is not meant to be taken literally. Rather, it is a metaphorical representation of a child's dream world, where anything is possible and the impossible becomes possible. The wooden shoe that sails the skies is a symbol of the child's imagination, taking them to far-off places in their mind. The old moon and the stars represent the guidance and support that the child receives from their caregiver.

The song is a lullaby, soothing and calming in tone, with its melodic tune and gentle lyrics. It speaks to the comforting nature of dreaming and the reassurance that can come from a parent's voice. It encourages children to use their imagination and explore their inner worlds.

Cancer unfortunately

@ts-eu6mp

Carly Simon had breast cancer the same time I did-in 2000-2001. The Album "The Bedroom Tapes" came out of that-and helped me t and from all my appointments. She is a private person, obviously. However, if the cancer has returned, nothing has been made of it-she did acknowledge it the first time. I would think she'd do the same-in her own time. Her children, husband, friends would protect her from the hoards of fans-true blue ones- and then the idiot chaser's of sorrow. Please don't say that her cancer is active and she doe not have long unless you are a family member, or close friend-which seems doubtful-because, I repeat, they will shield her. Please, do not do that. Hoping this gets through, I thank you in advance. Terri--who had it then and then my daughter died with cancer-she was with us just 4 years ago after beating it...+ 5 brain tumors before that-benign but deadly. You may have not a clue what a sentence like you wrote can do...please think again. Jenna Rose's Mother. And Carly admirer.

So sorry for your loss, Carley.

I’m in the midst of listening to “Boys in the Trees” audio book narrated by Carly herself. Just finished Chapter 9 when she mentions the song. I love peaking into a classic video of her and Lucy.

R.I.P. to Joey (Joanna) and Lucy Simon. 2 very lovely, talented ladies that passed last week. My heart goes out to sweet Carly. I can’t fathom losing both of my older sisters within a day of each other. 😢

RIP, with much music where ever you are.
