Macajey is the brainchild of Jeremy Macachor, a third-generation musician who has married tasty guitar sounds with energetic and ambient production to create an electronic style that holds the rhythm of classic soul and spontaneity and thickness of a live band. His newest effort, Let’s Go, is the follow-up to “Come On Over,” a track that was included in German label Traum Schallplatten’s Tour de Traum annual mix tape.
Macachor, influenced by artists like Gold Panda, Bonobo, Four Tet, and Slow Magic, has the ability to hook, intrigue, groove, and build his songs. A native of California and a world traveler, his musical background is a cultural amalgam of his life travels through London, Iceland, Scotland and Estonia. With a few years as a guitarist for various bands in California and London under his belt, Macachor began carving his own path in the electronic music world in April 2013, debuting at Estonia’s Papergirl art event. His first release, Water EP, came out in February 2014 to positive reviews. iamnotamusician.com states that Macajey “... does a great job of incorporating an eclectic array of beats, polyrhythms and melodies... there is an earthy vibe throughout the EP, which is no small task; lots of complex sampling and mixing going on.” The EP was followed by an official video for the title track, which featured San Francisco vocalist Elle Leatham. In support of Water EP, Macachor came back to the States for performances throughout California, including 1015 Folsom and Submission in San Francisco, as well as the multi-continental Unfuck the World Festival in Los Angeles.
Macachor also honed his production chops around the globe. Over the last few years he worked with emerging British band Landshapes, recorded and mixed the debut album of the Beirut-ish buzz band Odd Hugo, and engineered alongside Icelandic heavyweights Valgeir Sigurdsson and Ben Frost at Reykjavik’s Greenhouse Studios.
Standout tracks on Macajey’s Let’s Go include “Rrrumpus,” which features an uninhibited uptempo feel, entrancing guitar motifs, and dynamic swells that create a big atmosphere; “Dosa,” a tune with a methodical gallop, jammy percussive melodies, and a groove that goes well with friends and handclaps; and “The Fall,” a lush number that features the return of Elle Leatham on guest vocals and capitalizes on the best parts of Water EP.
