There's a radio station in Cleveland that started playing the title song Maggot Brain every Sunday morning at 1:30am from 1976 to 1995. In 1987, another Cleveland station started playing it every Saturday night at 11:30pm, a tradition carried on to this very day. Eddie Hazel did the solo in one take.

Reportedly, "Maggot Brain" was Hazel's nickname. Other sources say the title is a reference to band leader George Clinton finding his brother's "decomposed dead body, skull cracked, in a Chicago apartment."

According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told Eddie Hazel during the recording session to imagine he had been told his mother was dead, but then learned that it was not true. The result was the 10-minute guitar solo for which Hazel is most fondly remembered by many music critics and fans. Though several other musicians began the track playing, Clinton soon realized how powerful Hazel's solo was and faded them out so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar. Critics have described the solo as "lengthy, mind-melting" and "an emotional apocalypse of sound."

The entire track was recorded in one take. The solo is mostly played in a pentatonic minor scale in the key of E minor over another guitar track of a simple arpeggio. Hazel's solo was played through a fuzzbox and a Crybaby Wah wah pedal; some sections of the song utilize a delay effect.

I was in Vancouver with my Dad. He treated us to trip through Canada in a motor home. We went into Vancouver by bus. On return I looked down at the floor at a bus stop and saw a music cassette with MC5 'Kick Out the Jams' on it. I took it with me and found Maggot Brain inside and played it on my walkman. To say it blew my mind was an understatement. Never the same again.

Man, Funkadelic had already changed the way I perceived music, but this song completely rewired my brain, I swear. To this day, I warn people to be careful what kind of music they listened to when you are young; you ain't gonna get certain songs out your head.

I never thought it would be what it is today! Glad I'm not alone. Just my favorite Funkadelic Album because it just reminds me how things were then...simple but, clever.

This was a most stellar yet underrated band.
The late Eddie "Maggot Brain" Hazel is most definitely one of the greatest guitar legends to ever pick up the instrument!
He makes my top 10 list every time.
Rolling Stone magazine has acknowledged the man, however, they always rate him too low.

When George was telling Eddie what he wanted out of the Maggot Brain solo he asked him what the saddest thing he could imagine would be. Eddie said "My Mom dying". George told him to play that. There's never been a better solo and don't argue with me about it.

There is so much pain in that guitar solo in Maggot Brain that it's difficult to fully grasp. It's that bittersweet kind of pain. Those screaming parts bring back memories of overcoming adversity and beg for something larger than I can understand. Well i've just played along to this with my guitar, and although I can nail 90% of it down, im so very far from even doing justice to this song. Hazel's use of rests is just something else. The silence between the notes, the way he changes the volume of the notes he plays. Its astounding, and I appologize to him every time I play this song. Without a doubt my favourite guitar solo

Maggot Brain was a very big record to me and my high school friends. Jimi Hendrix had passed by the time we discovered this and it reminded us of him. We would skip class and sit in the van and listen. Maggot Brain was a long song but it never lasted long enough for us. It wasn't until much later that I began to appreciate the rest of the album. Can You Get To That should have been a great hit song ala The Temptations or Sly Stone but it never was that big. The beauty of American music in the 60's and 70's is that there were great musicians in every city around the country and they all had small independent labels. If you dig deep enough you will find great music that you only dreamed of.

I once got raided by the police, but this song was playing. As they walked into the smoke filled room, they caught ear of the music, and quietly laid on the floor mumbling "whoa...dude" as they stared at the ceiling. We all had a deep chat about how similar Clark Kent looks compared to Superman.

I was on the dirt Tarmac of some shit town waiting for a chopper when this album started playing. Only those of us who had flown in to protect the town from forest fires could hear it. All the towns folk were racing around, as usual, trying to breed their neighbours while complaining about gas prices. As pieces of town caught fire, the townsfolk started going 'house' to house to raise a mob against us - calling us elitists in our "fuckin war machines". A rather rough dog clearly saw us a better bet and hung around at our feet before naturally jumping between our feet as we flew out under the pellet of empty beer cans. As we began to loose sight, a young girl could be seen running out of her shack with a sign saying "no intelligent life here". We naturally landed and took her with us.

This is one of the best solos I have heard. Could have been better with less channel splitting but in the 70"s there were limitations on quantity of effects that were useful in shaping sound. For it's time period it rocks and is above most.

I suggest copping Bootsy Collins "The One Giveth The Count Taketh Away", Bernie Worrell's "All The Woo In The World", Funkadelics "Electric Spanking of War Babies"..there are many many more but if you want the holy grail you must have buy Eddie Hazel's "Games Dames & Guitar Thangs".

Have been listening to this album (song) for around 45 years, I think. I long ago lost my LP album and had forgotten the introduction and short epilogue spoken! What treat to hear that for the first time in around 30 years!!!! Thanks for this music which is a gift from God to us meager mortal humans that can receive God's message in our minds without words! This song is neither 'Art' nor 'Normal Music' but rather a message to those that can comprehend and feel the 'Spirit of Life' that lives within!

Wow. Completely randomly clicked on this as I've seen the album cover loads before and for some reason always found the expression on the woman's face annoying.... >< But holy shit. Maggot Brain...what a fucking intro. There's some seriously good guitar work on this album. Proof that it's always good to try and listen to genres you don't normally listen to!
