1) (also known as Magnificent) is a rapper who started out working with Mike Jones from the Swishahouse (Houston, Texas). He created underground rap music, releasing a mixtape of freestyles called Magno: The Collection Plate. Magno also released an album with Mike Jones called 1st Round Draft Picks. Magno left Swishahouse following a financial dispute in which Mike Jones demanded at least 80 percent of the profit from the concerts because he felt that he was the more popular rapper. That would have left Magno with twenty percent, an amount that wasn't enough to sustain him financially. Magno felt that they had both contributed equally to 1st Round Draft Picks, and that he was entitled to an equal portion of the profits, but when Mike Jones refused to take anything less than eighty percent Magno opted to leave Swishahouse and form his own label called Wild Life records. He then released a mixtape called Magno: The New Print. Magno is featured on several underground and mixtape albums.

Mary Polnow I am actually a type 1 diabetic...and I've never heard of this happening to anyone with the diabetes Also for the record,what is a "brittle" diabetic?! That sounds quit preposterous...I've been living with the disease for half my life and never have I ever seen anything like this. If her blood sugar was actually that low..she wouldn't have been strong enough to fight off her mother. She would have most likely passed out.

Kiraina Young Its actually a form of aggression due to the sensitivity. Its a strange reaction and many do have this form of function. brittle diabetes is a sub type of type one. Its harder to control and the swings in glucose are much larger than normal.

A while back, like in my first 4-5 years of diabetes, my mom used to test my blood glucose every night while me being aslept and when my glycaemia was lower than usual, she used to feed me with sugar and juice while I was half-aslept.Since then, I
developed this habit to eat without restraint everything it is given to me while not being entirely conscious. I went into hypoglycaemia coma for 5 times so far and luckily my mom was by my side and she could easily feed me, because I am calm and sleepy.

My friend who is also diabetic, do indeed have similar behaviour to this movie. She is shaking and laughing without reason while being under hypoglycaemia.It is because the brain doesn't receive enough energy (resulted from the presence of glucose) to give off normal reactions.

They state very clearly that Shelby is a special case. Meaning her body is more sensitive than the average diabetic. Meaning having kids is really something she should not have been doing.

And my sister who is a diabetic lost her son at 8 months pregnant, God has blessed her with another baby thankfully and he just turned five, diabetes is and can be very devastating. When you go into a diabetic low you completely zone out or pass out and become very agitated and confused when your sugar drops .

I had diabetes mellitus and I had a child. I did it without loss of my kidneys. I was lucky. I suffered from hypoglycemic unawareness. I would not wish that on anyone. I now have what is called a monitor. What a life saver. It tests my blood glucose every three minutes.

The nurse at Children's In Pittsburgh said this movie gets brought up almost everyday when they diagnose a child. The good thing is that since this movie was made so many advancements have been made. If it had been me, I would have tried to donate my eggs to a surrogate. You get a biological child and are alive to raise it.

I had a very similar experience with my daughter a few years ago. We had given her a cookie because her sugar was low, and she started choking on it. I managed to remove the cookie and started giving her Sprite, but she kept spitting it out. I felt so helpless. Finally, thank God, I managed to get enough in her that her sugar finally came up.

@Michelle Marie Those who use the phrase call this insulin shock, but it's a significant case of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). When the low starts, it's usually with irritability, lightheadedness as well as feeling tired and insanely hungry. Then if allowed to progress, you get the shakes and even get confused, disoriented, or combative but still conscious like Shelby did in this clip, which is why her mother used a liquid sugar source (the juice) instead of solid when trying to get her sugar up. Worst cases the person can lose consciousness even go into a coma or die without immediate medical treatment.

As a diabetic, yes this does happen. Everything in this scene happens. My sugar dropped to 28 in May of 2021 and the firefighters were called. I kept repeating "I'm going home" to my husband, even though I was on my own couch. The firefighters gave me full-calorie soda and two glucose packets. Five firefighters and two EMT's watched me for twenty minutes, checking my Dexcom to see when it got up to 70. It got up to 77 and they scooted. We now have two two-liters of full calorie soda plus glucose gel packs on hand for when I get a low.

@Ana ASMR The endo ordered a script after this happened, but it was over $275 with insurance, but when it happened, We had what had worked for 8+ years; chocolate and PB, but when you're sporting a 28 sugar, everything just shuts down. I knew what was going on, but the EMT had to pretty much force the gel down my throat. Gel, soda, more gel, soda until I was coherent enough to have the who/what/when/where/why conversation (ex: do you know who the president is?).

That's what happens, I'm type 1 insulin dependant and it's happened to me once. I didn't know where I was or what I was doing and woke up with an iv of glucose in my arm and the cops telling me they found me on the side of the road in my work truck and somehow drove 50 kms outta town. Managing diabetes is so much different now. Fast acting insulin is only taken with meals and is taken to match the carbs you eat. Long lasting insulin is taken once or twice a day to keep your glucose regulated. Back then insulin was just taken and you did you best with highs and lows. Also with glucose monitors you can catch hypoglycemia way before it gets this bad.

I remember my older relatives telling me about my great grandmother trying to manage her diabetes back in the 1930's. Sitting at the table eating oranges ( then a relatively rare treat) trying to get a grip on what was happening to her. Sadly she passed at the age of 56 due to complications.......

Not for everybody. I’m a t1d and you can’t always feel it until it gets that bad. You have scheduled times for insulin and glucose monitoring, but I can tell you I’ve been there on several dangerous occasions and it’s terrifying. My lowest glucose was 21 and I was home alone sleeping upstairs. I had taken all my glucose tabs and my roommate was at the store getting groceries and juice. I had to crawl downstairs which took over 30 minutes and when she walked in, I was ready to end it all and became so violent they had to call the squad. It’s just different, but the acting in this movie is incredibly accurate in those times and now

In a way I can relate to this. I once had a pet dog who suffered from seizures her entire life. Scary experience each time. Every time that I saw her having one, I would always be by her side as a means of comfort and to assure her she was going to be okay.

Honestly I liked the remake. I just didn't really like some of the acting in it. Most notably when they did this scene, the performance was so bland, it looked like the actress wasn't trying all that hard. She was too still and lifeless. I also wish they didn't copy almost every single line from the original movie. I felt like they were trying too hard to copy the original movie and some parts seemed rushed. With that being said, there were stuff I did like. For instance I loved the woman's performance who played Truvy, Queen Latifah was great, it was great to watch Phylicia Rashad play the fun Clairee (Wait. Clair Huxtable-Clairee Belcher. I never noticed the similar first names. lol Phylicia played Clair Huxtable in The Cosby Show but you probably already knew that.), I liked that they added the scene where Jackson talks to M'Lynn after Shelby's pregnancy is announced and the scene between M'Lynn and Shelby when M'lynn at the hospital where M'Lynn was tranferring her kidney to Shelby was super heartwarming and heartbreaking. Those two scenes I really wish were included in the original. All that being said, I liked the remake. It had its good points but I still prefer the original.

People can get confused and not be able to think, so they have a harder time finding words or thinking or spelling or articulating. That's the first sign they need something to eat. People don't notice that unless someone in their family had diabetes or are a nurse or a diabetic themselves.

I have to say that you are very lucky to never have experienced a low like this, but you WILL get to a state like this with some lows, don't underestimate them. They're rare, and are much more common for those people who have become desensitized to lows and need a CGM or service dog, or people who just have a hard time managing it in general. But the fact is once you get below 30-40 you begin to lose control of your brain, and that "hard to think" sensation goes to the extreme, where you literally can't think normally. You really do lose yourself until you get some sugar in you. I've seen fellow diabetics refuse juice and treatment when they dropped to extremely low numbers. I remember being quite young and fighting against it myself. I've heard from a friend of how their mother had an extreme low, and just shut her jaw as tight as she could and they couldn't get her to open it. The most unrealistic thing in this is how fast she improved, she wouldn't be back to talking normally until five or ten minutes have passed. In all fairness, again, it's rare. I've seen it happen a handful of times in twenty years as a type 1.

I was in Las Vegas, enjoying buffet breakfast with my husband, when a young woman suddenly collapsed over our table and her friends descended upon her to help immediately. It was eerily similar to this scene and I instantly thought "diabetic reaction" and gave the friends my glass of OJ. My husband, who (understandably) thought she had passed out Las Vegas style, wondered how I knew it was a diabetic reaction. Thank you, Julia Roberts!

I'm 22 and I'm diabetic since I was 9 years old. I watched this film from casualty when I was like 12 and give chills, it scares and every time Y remember it I cry so much, it's very sad for me, and a lot of diabetic people who I know.

My grandmother has type 2 diabetes, usually she gets up in all hours of the night to check her blood sugar and this scene nailed it because any type of fruit juice is good for stabilizing blood sugar, six or so years ago she had a very bad episode (mind you, this was a week after she was discharged from major back surgery) it was dead of night and she was screaming and crying while my mom was trying to calm her down while my grandpa called an ambulance, my dad took me to my parents room because I was young like 7 or 8, I'm 17 now and this scene resonates with my grandma's everyday struggle with her health and trying to improve my own health

Having suffered with panic attacks pretty much my entire adult life, the first time I saw this that's what I thought was happening, especially on the heels of her comment that things weren't settled with Jackson. You kind of go inside your head and the outside world becomes background noise, you start feeling off/like something bad is about to happen, then you get a flush of adreneline (when Shelby hits the arm of the chair after Truvy tries to fix her hair, that's what it feels like. Like there's energy you don't want in you that needs to get out.) I've trembled as bad as she is in this scene and don't have a terrific grasp of reality while its happening. Sedatives and setting an alarm (it takes about 30 minutes to fully kick in) are the only thing I've found truly effective.

I got diagnosed with type 2 insulin dependent. I have had these episodes at least 20x over the past year. My legs and arms feel weak first and then I start sweating perfidiously and then confusion. There are degrees of diabetes with mine my pancreas stopped producing insulin so I have to do shots 4x a day. These attacks usually happened in the beginning when my body was adjusting to the diabetes. The worse one my blood sugar dropped to 25 and I was in the hospital for 3 days. I think she did a pretty good job how someone feels. One thing for sure is that they are always scary and always exhausting.

Diabetes used to be really bad. My aunt was in a similar situation. She was diabetic and always sick. She adopted a kid but she always wanted a baby she wanted to prove she could but the doctors said it could kill her. She ended up dying but the baby lived so her dad named the baby miracle.

Diabetes is still "really bad." If you don't control it, it will eventually control you. I'm not talking about the people who take a pill because they eat too much cake, I'm talking about insulin dependents who keep rolling the diabetic dice. If you don't rigidly control the highs and lows, and few people do, you WILL eventually have kidney failure. My sister is now on dialysis three times a week, and living a miserable life instead of the happy retirement she had planned. It's downhill from there, with eyesight, other organ failure, amputations, and good luck keeping your blood pressure under 200. Dialysis clinics are packed full. It's the last chance while people wait for a transplant. If they qualify.

I have a diabetic friend at work, and he has had some similar attacks at work that terrified me. I saw him getting spacey and tried to direct him to take a break and eat. He kept saying he was good, he was good, until he was barely conscious. Our manager got him a sprite, and left me in charge of making sure he drank it. He kept closing his eyes, and I kept trying to force the sprite on him. It was very scary! I can't imagine what it's like.

Reactive Hypoglycemia is on the other end... has me diving for protein. Same horrible, clammy, shaky feeling. It is so awful. The come back always so good. Portrayed so well. There is not near enough info on reactive hypoglycemia :(

I've done this twice in the last year, but they hit me so fast, I didn't catch them in time and they ended with me having full black out, chronic tonic seizures and the ambulance being called, both of which happen just after my wedding. I was also born the year this movie came out, I really shouldn't have watched this movie as I child. I can remember having similar conversations with my mother growing up, it's scary and aggravating. I remember one time on the school bus, my sister told me to check my sugars and I was screaming at her that I was fine as I was going into seizure. After my husband saw my seizures in the past year he now knows not to listen to me.

There are now insulin pumps and monitors that internally check blood glucose so this does not happen, One does need good insurance so that it's affordable. Times have changed.

@jws1948ja Oh Yeah, I have an insulin pump and still had two seizures with it. Although the Gaudian sensors do help catch it before it gets that far, but they are about $250 a box. It has been interesting to see how far we've come though, I started with needles, then pens, and finally bit the bullet and bought a pump and sensors.

If you forget to eat, you may have hypoglycemia. You do not have to have diabetes to have hypoglycemia.

I was always surprised that Jackson went through with making a child. He knew all the risks. The dr. Litterally said she cant have a child. I guess he just wanted to make shelby happy. I get that shelby wanted a baby more than anything but besides her most probably dying ( which she did & was willing to w/ her speech about how she would rather 30 sec of something wonderful than a life of nothing special but if she was willing to risk her life that's her choice but poor little jack would grow up w/ o his mama & jackson would lose his wife. .

I wonder why they they did not mention a surrogate unless that wasnt possible like adoption bc of her health issues as she says. I def am not trying to come down on shelby. I always wanted a child & if I was told that I cant have one even though she wasnt infertile I would have such a hard dilemma to face too. I guess the risks for shelby & Jackson outweigheoutweighehsd the benefits & it was that important it was a risk she was willing to take. Ď

A couple of thoughts here. As far as Jackson goes, I simply don’t think he truly thought of the consequences. The point is made a couple of times that he probably won’t be a great husband and that he doesn’t listen to the doctors and so on. I’d chalk a lot of it up to immaturity. Plus, it is implied that he and Shelby are having marital problems and either one or both of them believe having a baby will fix/help the marriage.

As far as surrogacy, for one thing I don’t think surrogacy was quite as acceptable or common back then as it is now. And secondly, I’m guessing Shelby wouldn’t want to do surrogacy (if I couldn’t have kids I would never even consider surrogacy). She was quite bent on experiencing the whole thing herself.

This is just my assessment/what I surmise based on the time and events in the film.

@daughterofolaf I'm thinking of course of poor mylin esp how she really just was terrified of losing her only daughter her baby always & forever & I really felt bad when shelby told her " ur jealous u cant make decisions for me " I know shelby was frustrated bc she deep down knows this is scary to do. I mean even after mylin explained to jackson & shelby how she literally can't survive based on her drs & yet still after shelby had the baby her kidneys fail & theirs mom to give her the kidney & was the only one left as she was taken off life support. It is heart breaking. But I was thinking of jack jr too. I mean was it a tad selfish to have him knowing she omost likely would DIE & now he will never know his mom & think about the guilt that boy prob will feel when he learns having him killed her. U just know that Jackson sr good looking rich lawyer young will meet another woman fast. I just think it was a bit I dont want to say selfish but as an adult its s little frustrating. Yes Jack jr got the gift of life but his mom really should have waited or thought it out. Little jack is no doubt going to be missing his mama.

Also in my family when I was a teen my little cousin was 2 & got aplastic anemia . It was nothing in the parents Gene's from what I remember the mom had a great pregnancy it just happened. So everyone that was an adult in the fam was tested plus they had drives & only her 4 year old brother matched. The drs really did not want another child in the family to donate. I have to ask my aunt why but I think it was risky bc he was a little child too. So that's a risk benefit deal he was a 6 out of 6 match. On top of it my aunt was pregnant again & about 7 or 8 months & they tested her babys chord blood & it was 5 out of 6. So that baby was not as perfect a match but they would just take the chord blood no actual marrow from the infants hip when born but they also would have to induce 3 weeks or 4 weeks early if the little girl got really sick. I mean this was a serious dilemma that nobody could see coming. In the end they took the baby 3 weeks early the transplant was a success. I just think of all the variables my aunt & uncle faced. Thank goodness it all worked out. Bc the drs said their were serious risks for the 4 year old. They actually were not going to do it & keep searching but it was bleak. Not even her parents were a match at all. Then the drs would not take the baby 4 weeks early the closest was 3 weeks bc when u get to 2 weeks the baby is not considered premature at that point. I remember my aunt crying that she felt like it was some horrible choice of which child to save for awhile. Her 3rd pregnancy was not even planned but what a miracle in timing. So if a dr told me that if I had a baby & I'd be dead within a year of his or her life I dont think I'd do it. It's one thing if shelby was fine & at 6 months & dr told her something like if she carried to term she would die & decided to keep the baby I'd say she was brave bc she did not know but shelby & jackson knew all the risks & they were deadly for mom. I get she wanted her own baby bc later I guess adoption was ok bc mylin suggested it later in the film & shelby said she wanted to carry out. If surrogacy was an option w?/ her egg & her husbands sperm then I'd say that is the best option. Think besides the baby how devastating her death was to her parents her brothers her friends & her husband. Sorry I just saw this movie again for the first time in a very long time. I had a new perspective on it as an adult & a mom too. I guess shelby just figured the drs were wrong & in denial. On top of all the people that would be crushed h ou w bout shelby herself? She was a very young woman that did not need to die. She was it looked like a pediatric nurse. I also got the feeling she was afraid jackson really would not stay with her if he didnt have his own child. Even though she said he would adopt 9 kids the way she cried made mr think she still was insecure about it plus didnt she say so Many women would want him. I hope that was not a factor bc he looked pretty wrecked to me & now a single dad. I know I mentioned he would remarry bc i literally saw my uncle remarry only 2 years after his wife that he dated since they were 15 & only were with eachother & were married 55 years. So at like 71 he remarried another woman which shocked all of us & his sons dont talk to him much anymore.

my nephew was diagnosed a couple months ago with type 1. Many times his blood sugar hit 40 and even a little under. They have an emergency glucagon shot in case he goes so low he loses consciousness. My sister is up every night needing to give him juice. She describes it as a nightmare that will only get worse when he hits puberty.

As a type 1 diabetic for 48 years, diagnosed at age 3 - there is a great chance it will. I had more than a few periods of rebellion. When he screams ‘you don’t understand “ or “a you don’t know what it’s like” know that there are plenty of us out there that have already walked in his shoes....and we are there for him.

there is new technology that has changed my life. I now wear an insulin pump by Medtronic and a monitor/transistor. That equipment was life changing.

Steel Magnolias was always one of my Mom's favorites but when I was diagnosed with type 1 13 years ago, she more or less panics whenever it comes up in conversation or on the TV menu. Even I'm not that frightened of my own disease. I do my best but have never gotten to this point.

You do understand that you are remarkable. Even before I was diagnosed at age 17 I had hypoglycemic unawareness... I would eat something sweet and everything would go crazy. My sister hated me. I did not know why no one liked me. It was not until after my mother died that my sister informed me of what I did. My mother was one of the most passive people around.

@jws1948ja I was inches from death. They said I had diabetes for about a month before my official diagnosis. As a hyperactive, skinny 13 year old I loved to chug Red Bull, orange juice, Snapple and V-8. My mother was always supportive and my father was and still is a paranoid control freak who still tries to manage my health. I know I'm a 26 year old who looks 17 but I'm a goddamn adult who can take care of himself. I blocked him once because he wouldn't leave me be and he called the police on me. 🤣

My classmate did this all the time at school,and our teacher would have to take her outside and give her juice,and she would be very combative,and throw things and yell and curse. Us kids didnt understand,and I wish they would have explained it to us.

Franklin Hatcher That's how you know the acting was phenomenal. Even though no one in the script said that straight, Julia Roberts scared the audience so much that all watchers could think is, "drink the juice Shelby." Because it looked so bad that they, like the women in the movie, wanted her to be better.

I'm a Type 2 diabetic ( I'm not insulin dependent) and one time, just a few months after I was newly diagnosed, I hadn't eaten all day, but I took my medicine at about 4 o'clock and went swimming. I didn't eat before going swimming, either, because I knew we would be going out to eat that evening. So I swam for about two hours and then I came home to take a shower so we could go out to eat.

While I was in the shower, I started feeling buzzed and I think my heart rate was up and I know I felt dizzy. I knew something was wrong. Fastest showering have ever taken, I thnk! My husband was getting ready to get into the shower, I think, just as I was getting out. I went and took my sugar and it was sitting at 63. I told him I needed to eat something soon and he was like, "Yeah, I know. We're going to eat soon."

And I was like, "No, you don't understand, I need to eat something now..." and I told him about the dizzy feeling and the sugar reading. We got me a couple of pieces of wheat bread and I was okay after that.
