Girl I felt this in my soul! My senior year I had sharp pains in my abdomen, one day those pains made me pass out. I was standing at the time and literally face planted onto concrete. I am so surprised I did not break any teeth. Definitely broke my jaw and the source of pains were due to a cyst on my ovaries that ruptured. Good times lol. I was wired shut for one month and it was absolutely awful. The thought of not being able to open my mouth really screwed with my mindset. I lost hella weight, too. To this day I am not really a fan of chicken broth, jello or sprite or milkshakes. Definitely a limited palate when you’re wired shut. Blessings to you in your recovery!!❤️‍🩹

I broke my jaw too! But I didn’t have to get it wired. Got hit in the face with a discus and went to the ER an hour later. Couldn’t even bite down right. They told me I would have to have surgery. Went home. Went to jaw peoples office the next day. I was told that my jaw had miraculously aligned itself that night and I wouldn’t need surgery so long as I kept my teeth together and ate a liquid diet. I lost 20 lbs in a month on that diet

Me and my brother got into a fight when we were in high school. I ended up breaking his jaw. He went into emergency surgery and the wired his mouth shut for 4 weeks.

He lost like 20 lbs, weight that he didn't have to loose. They also prescribed him oxycotin. He'd later become addicted. 15 years later and he's still struggling with addiction. Just a horrible chain of events that I'm regretful for every day.

Going thru it rn. Double Jaw surgery, wired shut for 4 weeks. I get my splint out Monday. Can’t wait. I know I still won’t be able to chew for another 2-4 weeks I think. My sister had jaw surgery. She was stuck at home, her face swollen. She was slobbering and constantly having to wipe liquid food off her face. She is naturally very thin (about 100 lbs) and no one told her about the weight loss. She barely ate. All her bones started protruding. Her knees were scary. She looked like a skeleton and felt awful. They cut her out of the metal early because she needed to eat food right away. She's glad she had the surgery even though she'll need some more on her gums. She's almost done with her braces too. Still, it was awful seeing my sister so miserable and angry at life like that. She just spent her days crying, whining and trying to scream her frustration at us. I'm glad she's good now.
Edit: She's out of the braces and had the gum transplant she needed. She's doing great and her face honestly looks even better than it did before. Seeing old pictures is kinda weird now. 😅

I got my jaw broked at 17 because of a kick that I got while I was practicing Tae kwon do. It was a nightmare not being able to eat. The first days where the hardest ones. And I also couldn't talk. Two weeks after I got my mouth shut I also got appendicitis lol 😂 the doctors hated me so much because they needed to open my mouth in order to put the necessary oxigen tubes for the anesthesia. Luckely my jaw had healed a bit so they it didn't brake again. After the surgery I had my mouth shut back again. I lost like 5 pounds a week. I was so weak.
After they removed the wires I asked for some French fries. The doctor didn't tell me that I would be losing all the strength of my face muscle. So I felt those French fries like bitten pieces of wood. 😢

However the appendicitis was more painful. I don't remembered very well but I don't recall taking any pain Med, just antibiotics. Any medication that I got was iv since I couldn't swallow anything, so maybe in the hospital I got pain medication and I didn't notice lol (I was just 17)

I had my jaws wired shut after having a fracture there. I drank shakes, protein smoothies, soups, ensure. I too used an oral rinse as a substitute for tooth brushing. The rinse had hydrogen peroxide in it. It helped a lot. I did lose weight for someone already slender at the time.

If you ever break your jaw and this happens to you (it did to me years ago), use a water flosser device in addition to brushing the outside + mouth rinse. It really helps keep it clean. And the oral surgeon gives you wire clippers in the small chance you have to throw up or something.

That is NOT true... I was in an accident in 1993 and had really badly broken jaw and other injuries but after surgery I had orange juice in my room and drank it and it tasted so much lime the gin and juice we drank that caused my accident that I threw up with a wired jaw right there in my hospital bed. You're on a liquid diet for 45 days. At least that's how long mine were wired shut and it squeezes through your teeth just like any liquid would.

My mom had to have her jaw broken when she was a teenager to fix her teeth and jaw alignment. I don't remember EXACTLY why but I recall her story of how she want from 120 pounds to barely over 90, and that she used to get introuble by her teachers for not participating in class (even though the entire school system was acutely aware that she has her mouth wired shut)

I had a double jaw surgery done for severe underbite, but all the tablets they gave me after the surgery made me sick.
Vomiting with your mouth wired shut means it’s comes out of your nose. It was hell. God awful.
But I’d do it all over again. The surgery was the best thing I ever did. I could look in a mirror without crying after I had it done. Totally worth it.

Yes, my son had a few panic attacks during the time he had his jaw wired shut because of the severe anxiety. Fortunately those were the only anxiety attacks he ever had. They were lightened a bit when the surgeon gave us wire cutters on a ribbon for him to wear or keep in his pocket. The idea was that should something awful happen we could make the decision to cut the wires and free his jaw. It would mess up the surgery but it could save his life if something awful happened - like he aspirated or needed intubated. It was a very scary time for the both of us.

i remember my aunt had her jaw wired shut because of an underbite that had ended up causing problems (I dont know the exact details), and had to have it like that for a solid couple months. She had to use the oral mouthwash too, but apparently when she finally got them off because of being unable to brush her tongue, it was all gross and gunky black. took a lot of scrubbing but eventually her tongue was back to normal lmao

Wow that seems like a nightmare. I also had underbite problems, got double maxilofacial surgery but never had my mouth wired shut (it's probably bc im ina different country). It was just my muscles that were traumatised from the surgery and the plaques that had been fixated on my bones to avoid breaking until it was healed. For two weeks I drank liquids and some mashed food, couldn't pass more than a finger then two for a while so brushing was difficult but still possible. Just in two weeks I lost 4 kgs, can't imagine having that diet for months😮

We asked if there were any other options and I got outside braces instead (not sure what's it's actually called in English) for only 6 months! You can still see that my chin is further back but my teeth line up perfectly now!

oooof I remember this period of time. My jaw surgeon kept me in hospital for the period of time I had my jaw wired shut. I had other underlying health issues that needed me to stay admitted. So I was fed through an IV. Once they took the wires out I was still incredibly swollen and in pain but that's when I started eating the smoothies and other liquid foods. I was so excited to start chewing I jumped the gun and hurt myself because I started chewing before the go ahead form my surgeon. Anyways it's all over now and I have some metal in my jaw for the rest of my life to remind me of it 😅.

Had this done many years ago due to broken jaw. I was always hungry never felt full, when they finally unwired jaw, still couldn't eat for couple weeks. Muscles had to loosen up for mouth to fully open again. It's been about 40 yrs but I still remember the hunger more then the pain.

Got in a car wreck in 06 and broke my jaw in multiple places and had to have my jaw wired shut... it wasnt a fun time lol but he is right about loosing weight 😂 they put metal braces around my teeth and used rubber bands that hooked onto the braces. Had to get multiple metal plates put in to hold my jaw together as well.

I had an ex who got in a fight & dude broke his jaw, had his jaw wired shut, he was mean af to me cuz he was in so much pain & I basically waited on him constantly had to make him broth & soup & watered down mash potatoes ever meal. A few years later, a different ex also got in a fight where he got hit w a baseball bat & several days later we made him go to the hospital & he was never mean to me & appreciated me taking care of him. He also ended up putting them apart himself & had to get a 2nd surgery 😂
