Don't Break The Heart That Loves You
Margo Smith Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Handle it with care
Don't break the heart that needs you
Darling, please be fair
Why do you flirt, and constantly hurt me?
Why do you treat our love so carelessly?
And yet you seem to try
To go out of your way
To be unkind
Sweetheart, I'm begging of you
Don't break this heart that loves you
Don't break this heart of mine
Darling, please don't hurt me
Please, don't make me cry
I don't know what I'd do if you'd ever say goodbye
Remember, I love you so much
And love is life's greatest joy
Please don't break my heart like a child breaks a little toy
Sweetheart, I'm begging of you
Don't break this heart that loves you
Don't break this heart of mine
The lyrics to Margo Smith's song "Don't Break the Heart That Loves You" are a plea from the singer to their significant other, asking them not to mistreat their love. The first verse emphasizes the fragility of the heart that loves, and the necessity of handling it with care. The second verse addresses the hurtful behavior of the romantic partner, questioning why they seem to deliberately hurt the one who loves them. The chorus repeats the titular phrase, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.
Throughout the song, the singer displays deep vulnerability and fear at the prospect of having their heart broken. They express jealousy and a sense of betrayal, wondering why their partner would be unkind to them. The desperation and emotional weight in the singer's voice add to the melancholic tone of the song.
Overall, "Don't Break the Heart That Loves You" is a poignant reminder of the importance of kindness and consideration in romantic relationships. It emphasizes the lasting damage of mistreating a partner's love and the necessity of treating that love with respect and care.

I love, love, this classic. Margo has the sweetest voice. We met her here in my hometown around 1972 when she and her band did a show with Faron Young and his band. They had a full house and were just wonderful. Two very outgoing personalities - perfect entertainers with so much talent. She's a pretty gal. I like all of her ballads and, of course, she is a heck of a yodeler as we know. Thank you for posting this winner. - Paula
