Sleep Walking
Maria Lawson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Barely seem to be awake
Praying that they won't be late
You know they're in the office when you're calling
Head inside a magazine
Wishing they could live their dream
[Chorus]
Dream talking of how it used to be
The future's just a memory
But it's all you got
Can't stop the clock
The wall revolves and you can't get out
One by one the dreams are gone
Today you're the lonely one
Free from all you've wished yourself
Thought you'd left you on the shelf.
How could this be history?
When the future seemed to be
Brighter than the stars above
Full of hope and full of love.
Walking through the door with the TV on
Children running round your feet
Fast forward to you're asleep
And every days the same and you don't know why
You promise that you'll never be
Everything that you now see
[Chorus]
One by one the dreams are gone
Today you're the lonely one
Free from all you've wished yourself
Thought you'd left you on the shelf.
How could this be history?
When the future seemed to be
Brighter than the stars above
Full of hope and full of love.
So follow your dreams
No matter how extreme
Really live your life (yeh)
Cause your life is in your hands
Don't take no other plans
You can do it if you just believe you can.
[Chorus:Repeat x2]
The song "Sleep Walking" by Maria Lawson speaks of a person stuck in a routine, living their life on autopilot without realizing it. The first verse depicts people on their way to work, barely awake and daydreaming about what could have been. The chorus highlights the main theme, the feeling of being lost and not knowing how to move forward with life. The lines "Sleepwalking through your destiny, Dream talking of how it used to be, The future's just a memory, But it's all you got" emphasize this feeling of being stuck in the present, not being able to move towards the future. The second verse reinforces this idea, portraying the notion that one's dreams have vanished, leaving them feeling lonely and defeated.
Towards the end of the song, an encouragement to follow one's dreams is given: "So follow your dreams, No matter how extreme, Really live your life, Cause your life is in your hands, Don't take no other plans, You can do it if you just believe you can." The last two lines, in particular, are quite inspiring, encouraging listeners to believe in their abilities and telling them that they can achieve anything with determination and a positive attitude.
