First Haiku
Mariam the Believer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

up with the stars now
there is no space to inhale
stay invisible

or reversible
turn a cross into a board
and surf on the black
one hand would stay closed
and the other so open
completely feeling

what would be your choice
to let go or to let loose
irreversible

the moment in air
is worth the fall, to sail on
a piece of paper

in separate thoughs
waved in to one another
how can they explain

who you are, in ink
what we got, in a letter
stars laugh with big mouths

a chain reaction

they won't let us reach that far
when we're together

Overall Meaning

The first haiku by Mariam the Believer can be interpreted as a contemplation on the concept of visibility and invisibility, and the choices we have in life. The opening line "up with the stars now" suggests a lofty, ethereal perspective, as if the singer is looking down on the world from above. The next line, "there is no space to inhale" serves as a metaphor for being suffocated or constrained. It seems as if the singer is suggesting that being visible, open, and exposed to the world can be overwhelming or suffocating, and thus it is better to "stay invisible."

The second verse seems to explore the idea of choice and its consequences. The line "irreversible" suggests that once a choice is made, it cannot be undone. The singer poses the question of "what would be your choice" and then presents two options: "to let go or to let loose." These options can be interpreted as opposites - letting go may mean releasing control whereas letting loose may mean indulging in or surrendering to desires. The final line "the moment in air is worth the fall, to sail on a piece of paper" serves as a paradox, suggesting that taking risks and being vulnerable might be worth the fall or the pain that comes with it.

The final verse seems to focus on interpersonal relationships and the limitations of communication. The lines "in separate thoughts waved in to one another, how can they explain" suggest a sense of disconnect between people, even if they are trying to communicate. The final line "they won't let us reach that far when we're together" serves as a commentary on the limitations of relationships and how we are unable to achieve true connection with others.
