Marios Frangoulis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Confondono i pensieri
The lyrics of Marios Frangoulis's song "Caruso" tell a poignant story of love and loss. The song paints a picture of a man on an old terrace, overlooking the Gulf of Sorrento, embracing a weeping girl. As his voice clears, he begins to sing to her, telling her how much he loves her with a passion that runs as deep as his blood. The man remembers seeing lights on the ocean and thinking of nights in America, but it turns out to be only the lamps on the propeller of a ship. He feels the pain of his loss in the music he plays, and when he sees the moon emerge from a cloud, his sorrow deepens. He gazes into the girl's eyes, which are as green as the sea, and a tear falls from his eye. He begins to sing again, his passion for the girl renewed, even as life comes to an end.
The lyrics of "Caruso" are full of emotion and depth, telling a story of love, loss, and the power of music to express the heart's deepest pain and longing. The man's voice represents the beauty and power of his love, a love that is stronger even than death. The lyrics speak to the power of music to heal, as the man's singing helps him to deal with his pain and loss. At the same time, the song speaks to the transience of life and the inevitability of death, reminding us to treasure the people and moments we hold dear in our lives.

Qui dove il mare luccica
This is a place where the sea shines bright
E tira forte il vento
And the wind blows strong
Su una vecchia terrazza
On an old terrace
Davanti al Golfo di Surriento
Facing the Gulf of Sorrento
Un uomo abbraccia una ragazza
A man embraces a girl
Dopo che aveva pianto
After she had cried
Poi si schiarisce la voce
Then he clears his voice
E ricomincia il canto
And starts singing again
Te voglio bene assaje
I love you so much
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
But you know it oh so well
È una catena ormai
It's a chain now
That melts the blood inside your veins
Vide le luci in mezzo al mare
He saw the lights in the middle of the sea
Pensò alle notti là in America
Thought about the nights in America
Ma erano solo le lampare
But they were just the lamps
Nella bianca scia di un'elica
In the white wake of a propeller
Sentì il dolore nella musica
He felt the pain in the music

He stood up from the piano

Gli sembrò più dolce anche la morte
Even death seemed sweeter to him

He looked into the girl's eyes
Quelli occhi verdi come il mare
Those green eyes like the sea

And he thought he was drowning
Potenza della lirica
The power of the lyrics
Dove ogni dramma è un falso
Where every drama is a lie
That with a bit of trickery and acting
Puoi diventare un altro
You can become someone else
Ma due occhi che ti guardano
But two eyes that look at you
Così vicini e veri
So close and true
Ti fan scordare le parole
Make you forget your words
Confondono i pensieri
Confuse your thoughts
Così diventa tutto piccolo
So everything becomes small
Anche le notti là in America
Even the nights in America
Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
You turn around and see your life
Come la scia di un'elica
Like the wake of a propeller
Ma sì, è la vita che finisce
But yes, life ends
Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto
But he didn't really think about it
Anzi si sentiva già felice
In fact, he already felt happy
E ricominciò il suo canto
And he started singing again

so beautifully sang. Magnificent singing voice and piano playing too. Thank you Mario,

Different from the classical interpretations of Caruso by Pavarotti and Dalla themselves. But if it wasn't different there would be no reason to listen to that of Fragkoulis. The power of his voice combining with the strong piano give a lot of momentum in the lyrics. Very remarkable one I believe!
