The second band 'Marlo' is a band from Washington State known for their Indie/Electronica sound. There are two members of Marlo, Danny VanHollebeke and Timmy Hudson. Their latest (and only) album is known as "Secrets of the Universe". Their songs include Diamond Smuggling, Alone and Honored Out, 22, Earth Suit, and Mr. F. The cold part is, all of this happens because Marlo got embarrassed at the poker game. So back on the corner, he flaunts who he is in a bodega as means of reasserting himself. Hardest part of life sometimes is knowing that there are certain people who you can't talk to, teach, or reach. And just leave them to their fate.

Wrong. People keep saying this but the reality is, with someone like Marlo, this 100% would have still happened if the picker game happened or not. The factor in this equation is the security guard deciding to approach this in the way that he did. It all henges in the security guards choices here. Poker game or not, Marlo was STILL going to engage in that extreme Alpha male, dominance action and behavior of taking the lilly pop and forcing whoever saw it to submit/ ignore it, or think they were tough and equal to him in which case Marlo would then have his reason to dominate and use him as just another example of his domination, superiority and conquest.

The security guard made his mistake in this dynamic and even worse did so with the absolute wrong one, and he paid for it with his life.

This is a real life occurrence and dynamic that happens at all levels. Learn from this and avoid making the same mistakes.

The security guard isn't getting respect in Baltimore like the members of the drug trade are, despite the impression that they had achieved that respect for the wrong reasons (getting rich and receiving notoriety for killing and slinging drugs, not the honest lifestyle that the security guard is working towards). The security guard wants it this way where the hardworking and honest people of Baltimore are shown respect and recognized in society for what they do. But, Marlo informs him that "it's the other way" meaning those who are running the drug trade and breaking the law end up being respected and well known throughout Baltimore. Here's my interpretation: "it" is respect. Marlo is saying "you want respect to go one way, me respecting you." Now normally someone would say "but respect has to go both ways." what's most interesting to me about this scene is that the marlo's line, when written in the script, reads "you want it be one way, but it's the other" obviously explaining to the guard that he's not beholden to rentacop authority despite the guard's entreatment. but instead of delivering the line as most people would, the actor puts an emphasis on "one way" implying that there are instead several, and only later clarifying that "it's the other way". a very zen moment

He means that the guard wants to be respected, and for Marlo to have to recognize and respect him as a man, but he's not willing to fight for that respect. He says that he's a man, but when Marlo steps to him the guy looks away and backs down. Marlo is telling him that you can't have it one way. You get the respect you're willing to fight for. Marlo, for all his horribleness, was willing to die right there on that corner rather than let someone disrespect him even the slightest bit.

One of the themes of The Wire was about how there has been a transition away from older, more careful and professional dealers like Stringer. The mandatory minimums and the sentencing guidelines that incentivize the use of minors have brought a younger generation into the game, and they general lack the organization or ethic of the earlier generation. Obviously the earlier generation killed and did bad shit, but there's a reason you hear about the Frank Lucas types using a lot of their money to buy people THanksgiving turkeys, and doing other things for the community in order to maintain relationships that protect their business. The new generation doesn't really expect to be around long, and most of them don't understand the first thing about legitimate investment, which is why we see more of the brash, ridiculous $20k rims and expensive flashy clothes... you gotta spend it on something, and these kids don't know anything about putting the money into an electronics repair shop like Prop Joe. The generation brought up on gangster rap has learned that being quiet about what you're doing misses the entire point, which is why none of them last very long.

Omar and Avon was a joke compared to Marlo. So is Prop Joe. Those guys let their emotions get to them. Look at Stringer's beef with Avon, they went separate ways, their entire organization was a mess in Season 3. The cops didn't even need to step in, they lost the game themselves. Marlo never had no need with no emotions or some outside influence or some shit like that. He had no morals, and that was what made him good. He had plenty of followers who did whatever he said at the drop of a hat.

Close, but Marlo seems to me like the kind of guy who hates chaos, since everything he does is to maintain control and order in his favour. The security guard wants the order to be lawful and civilised, in doing so he's disrupting Marlo's established order which is unlawful and brutal.
